Loya Jirga assembly votes for U.S.-Afghan security deal

Sun Nov 24, 2013 3:11am EST

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan's Loya Jirga assembly voted on Sunday in favor of a crucial security deal with the United States, a deputy speaker said, a deal that would pave the way for U.S. troops to remain in the country after 2014.

The verdict was read out after 50 committees made up of about 2,500 elders, tribal leaders and other influential people had made their final address to the gathering. Not one objected to signing the deal.

(Reuters) - Afghan president Hamid Karzai said on Sunday the United States needed to bring peace to Afghanistan before he would sign a security deal which will enable Washington to keep troops in the country beyond next year.

"If there is no peace then this agreement will bring misfortune to Afghanistan," Karzai said in his closing remarks to the Loya Jirga assembly of elders and dignitaries. "Peace is our precondition. America should bring us peace and then we will sign it."

The president did not elaborate, but has previously said that a free and fair election is needed to guarantee peace in the country.

I expect the Taliban will plunge that place back into the 8th century after we leave, unless the Afghans reject them.

that what the Elders voted for doesn't necessarily meet what was expected of them by those they represent.

Karzia had also already made it clear too that the US will be restricted to pursuit of the 100 or so remaining al Qaeda members with a complete hands off with respect to the Taliban who will be off limits to the US.

No thanks. I don't want to spend another cent or waste another life on that shithole of a place.

All the money for Taliban comes from Pakistani ISI and sales of opium by both.
