New Snowden docs show U.S. spied during G20 in Toronto

Source: CBC News

Top secret documents retrieved by U.S. whistleblower Edward Snowden show that Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government allowed the largest American spy agency to conduct widespread surveillance in Canada during the 2010 G8 and G20 summits.

The documents are being reported exclusively by CBC News.

The briefing notes, stamped "Top Secret," show the U.S. turned its Ottawa embassy into a security command post during a six-day spying operation by the National Security Agency while U.S. President Barack Obama and 25 other foreign heads of state were on Canadian soil in June of 2010.

The covert U.S. operation was no secret to Canadian authorities.

The NSA that says it is operating totally within the law? Or Edward Snowden that is exposing their lawless international criminality?

The spying at the Toronto summit in 2010 fits a pattern of economic and political espionage by the powerful U.S. intelligence agency and its partners such as Canada.

That espionage was conducted to secure meeting sites and protect leaders against terrorist threats posed by al-Qaeda but also to forward the policy goals of the United States and Canada.

The G20 summit in Toronto had a lot on its agenda that would have been of acute interest to the NSA and Canada.

The world was still struggling to climb out of the great recession of 2008. Leaders were debating a wide array of possible measures including a global tax on banks, an idea strongly opposed by both the U.S. and Canadian governments. That notion was eventually scotched.

This just goes to show that it's all about money and protecting the interests of the super rich and powerful. Everything else, including people, soldiers, police, and allies are just tools to be used by the super rich. It also shows that "they" are willing to use terrorism and 9/11 for their own personal gain regardless. Spying and surveillance have become their own Achilles heel ironically. In my mind Edward Snowden deserves a medal. It takes a brave American to pull the lid off this shell game we shamelessly call "American democracy and idealism". It's a hoax used to make us all play along and Canada should be just as pissed off especially after the Canadian government used "Agent Provocateurs" and corralled their own citizens at that summit. It's bloody disgusting what they do. Thank you Edward Snowden. You've once agin helped us all see the light in the dark underworld of political power.

On the Canadian end of this, I think that Harper had thought that G20 debacle was far in the rear view mirror. Now his scandal plagued party should have to answer (every day in parliament), about their stewardship of national sovereignty, and criminality under Canadian law for the SCEC's complicity with corporate espionage on home turf.

At the very least on an ethical level, it makes one question the validity of international trade agreements too, considering that they may have been negotiated in bad faith, creating unfair advantages.

Its another to facilitate a foreign government and help them set up their spying apparatus within your borders.

I, as a Canadian, am incensed. But he's a Con. He has the support of a base that loves authoritarians. Much like Rob Ford, another Canadian con, who still has 42% support. All Harper needed last time was 39% and a split in the other 2 parties votes.

That our government Spy Apparatus and government oversight officials use OUR Tax Dollars to further enrich the 1% at the expense of the Working Class & The Poor...
IS big news,
and something that the 99% should NOT tolerate.

Not many responses here.

Look, if CSEC did this alone it would be unprecedented and illegal. Them allowing a foreign government to do it is over the top.

And look, the US wasn't spying on suspected terrorists. They were spying on world leaders. How would you feel if Canada was allowing the Russians to spy on Obama during a political summit?

I'm amazed at how few south of the border seem to care of this little bit of news

That's why Americans constantly get screwed. They do it to themselves. This is, as a poster listed above, "the smoking gun", but they just roll over and keep taking it. Barely a peep even here on the #1 liberal site. This is proof that everything is just a charade to make the rich richer and give the powerful more power yet it is blatantly accepted as the status quo that can't be changed. The silent reaction to it paints a pretty bleak picture. I guess Black Friday, which now takes place on thursday, was more important. Ah capitalism! You truly are amazing. Not.
