54 bodies found in common graves in Peru

Lima (AFP) - The remains of 54 people, mostly women and children, have been found in common graves in southern Peru, prosecutors said.

The remains, including 26 children and 18 women who had been killed by rifle fire, were found in 19 graves in the town of Chungui.

"For the moment it cannot be determined if they were executed by the (Maoist) Shining Path or the army," prosecutors said, citing forensics specialists.

Experts believe the victims were killed perhaps in 1986 during the first term of president Alan Garcia (1985-1990).

3. I went from Ayacucho over the Andes to the Apurimac River valley a few years ago.

There were still a couple of burned out villages along that road, and a few marked burial sites of Senderistas.

There's still a few Senderistas operating in the area, they call it the VRAE (Valley of the Ene and Apurimac Rivers), and it's a big coca-growing area. I think the Senderistas have devolved into just doing the drug trafficking thing now. No more Gonzalo Thought.

It was weird going from Cusco, full of global travelers, to Ayacucho, where I was the only gringo around, and then to those little villages way up in the mountains, where little children hid behind their fathers at the sight of me.

Andean peasants asserted today that soldiers in Ayacucho Province shot or stabbed to death 59 people in a massacre in two villages late in August. They said most of the victims were children and elderly people.

Two adults and three children appeared at a news conference in Parliament on Tuesday. One of the adults, Nemesio Gutierrez, said the massacre was carried out by soldiers who arrived Aug. 27 by helicopter in the villages of Bellavista and Umaro high in the Andes and about 425 miles southeast of Lima.

If substantiated, it would be the second massacre of a large number of peasants by soldiers since President Alan Garcia took office July 28 and pledged to halt human rights violations by security forces fighting the Maoist Shining Path rebels.

A military investigation confirmed that at least 49 people were slain by soldiers on Aug. 14 in the hamlet of Accomarca, also in Ayacucho Province.
