Biden won't make headway in China if he repeats 'erroneous' remarks - paper

(Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Joe Biden should not expect to make much progress in defusing tensions over the East China Sea if repeats "erroneous and one-sided remarks" on the issue during a visit to China, a top state-run paper said on Wednesday.

Biden, who arrived in Beijing on Wednesday, is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Vice President Li Yuanchao later in the day. He flies to Seoul on Thursday.

But he "should not expect any substantial headway if he comes simply to repeat his government's previous erroneous and one-sided remarks", the official English-language China Daily, often used by China to get its message across to the outside world, said in a strongly worded editorial.

"If the U.S. is truly committed to lowering tensions in the region, it must first stop acquiescing to Tokyo's dangerous brinkmanship. It must stop emboldening belligerent Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to constantly push the envelope of Japan's encroachments and provocations."

4. Dear President Xi Jinping...

The USA is involved here, thanks to the Pacific War (WWII), and the Korean War. At the end of the Pacific War, Japan and the USA signed an agreement that the USA would come to Japan's defence. Same thing for the (Republic of) Korea after the armistice. AFAIK both deals meant no nuclear missiles for Japan and Korea.

As long as the status quo remains, the USA is in the middle of this. President Xi, Vice President Biden has come to talk about this. I'm positive that he will continue with the same message as always - the USA really doesn't want anything to do with the political squabbles between the Peoples' Republic of China (PRC) and its neighbours. I believe with the PRC establishing a new ADIZ right over the top of part of Japan's already declared ADIZ, and also over the top of part of Korea's airspace, not to mention the issues with the Republic of China (aka Taiwan)... it's definitely political posturing on the PRC's part.

I believe Mr. Biden's message is this: you guys sort the political mess between yourselves but remember, if you the PRC decide to step it up a notch with your neighbours militarily, the USA will have to get involved thanks to its treaty obligations.

Now if Japan starts ramping up quickly its military forces... and making nuclear missles (I do believe that there's some spare nuclear fissile material in a place called Fukushima...) then the USA will step back. Yup, President Abe is pushing the envelope a bit (he is a nationalist after all) but he does know where to stop.

7. This area has been under Japanese control. Go to the UN and get them to tell China to back off.

But I have little faith in the UN actually doing the right thing and backing up Japan. Even if they did, whatever they passed would be vetoed by China.
