NSA Opponents Want To Cut Off Utah Facility From Water Supply
Source: TIME
A group of activists in Utah think theyve found the ultimate weakness of a massive new data center the National Security Agency is building in Utah: water.
While the facility will feature state of the art technology and security measures, at the end of the day, like any other building, the data center will rely on local utilities, and local opponents want to cut it off from the grid. Advocacy groups, which have formed the OffNow coalition, are pushing for state legislation that would cut off utilities to the NSAs new data center being built in Bluffdale, Utah. The argues that the NSAs electronic snooping violates the Fourth Amendment, which protects against unwarranted searches and seizures, and proposed state legislation known as the 4th Amendment Protection Act would prevent the local government from supporting the building with local utilities.
In short, they can turn the water off, the group says on its website, noting the data center would use 1.7 million gallons of water ever day
The effort is sure to be stymied by federal authorities, but its the latest example in states rights activists toying with the idea of nullification of federal laws. The group is also making its case in a YouTube video advocating for the nullification of some federal laws...

(3,596 posts)I am all for stopping this government from continuing unconstitutional spying on its citizens.....
We cannot rely on Congress or the President to act. The President loves snooping into you e-mails and your phone calls. The majority of thinks it is great as long as no one finds out they are buying crack on the street or hiring a prostitute. Hey, we are just a bunch of frat bois who are looking for some fun.
We must use all legal means available to stop the government. If those means fail then that is another step in escalation.
They think they hold the cards when we know the people actually hold the cards....

(10,007 posts)With respect to the NSA and its Big Brother-style surveillance, we can most definitely rely on Congress and the President to act - against the interests of American citizens and in favor of shadowy government agencies.

(29,205 posts)cooling computer systems is all about heat exchangers...
It would be more expensive to have a air cooled final heat exchanger (closed loop water transport), but it is certainly doable.
Cut off their power, and don't "permit" them to build their own power plant, and you might be onto something.

(11,843 posts)A building I worked at had it's AC and server cooling by evaporative cooling. When you were going in or out of the building, you could hear the fans kick on and sometimes feel the humidity go up, since the exhaust was fairly close to the front door.

(6,905 posts)The feds could cut off Utah's water, Utah has to import it from that awful country that owns the NSA,
These "activists" should just convince the NSA to build the facility elsewhere. I'll bet most states would welcome the jobs.

(6,905 posts)but there will be jobs in Utah. If they don't want the jobs, a lot of other places would take them.
