General Motors Names Mary Barra as Chief Executive

Source: NYT

DETROIT — General Motors said Tuesday it had named Mary T. Barra, the automaker’s head of product development, as its next chief executive, succeeding Dan Akerson, who will step down in January. She would be the first female C.E.O. of a major automaker..

Mr. Akerson, 65, is accelerating his planned retirement by several months after his wife was diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer, the company said in a statement.

Ms. Barra, 51, has been with G.M. for 33 years, rising through a series of manufacturing, engineering, and senior staff positions.

The board also named Theodore Solso to succeed Mr. Akerson as chairman. Mr. Solso, 66, is the former chairman and chief executive of Cummins Inc. and has been a G.M. board member since June 2012.
