U.S.-backed Syrian rebel commander flees country

Source: UPI

WASHINGTON, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- The top Western-backed Syrian rebel commander fled the country after Islamist militant fighters ran him out of his headquarters, U.S. officials said.

Free Syrian Army Gen. Salim Idris flew to the Qatari capital of Doha Sunday after fleeing to Turkey, the officials told the Wall Street Journal.

"He fled as a result of the Islamic Front taking over his headquarters," a senior U.S. official said.

An Islamic Front spokesman said Idris, an East German-trained electronics professor who was a Syrian army general until he defected to the rebel side in July 2012, fled to Turkey.

And the Islamists who are muscling in on the real Syrian revolution are backed by "our" allies.

Bashar al Assad should have been our man. He was an ally and helped us in many situations.

Then someone got the wise idea of supporting an Islamic Republic and we were goaded by Saudi Arabia and Qatar into supporting the terrorist radicals. Israel also wants Assad gone because it weakens Hizbollah. Israel would have a much easier time bombing and killing a self-declared and brutal islamic republic.

Assad proved too strong and with Russian help, he has managed to stay. We should support his secular regime that won't bring about misogynist sharia to Syria.

I say we should tell the Saudis that if they don't shape up, we'll support Iran and Syria to bring down the bloated monarchy.

As in money. Without our trade the Chinese economy would be in chaos. Our money provides them with weapons.

Even so, I think we can both agree that there is a fundamental difference between conducting trade with China and propping up a dictator with weapon sales and foreign aid.

The FSA and its Supreme Military Council, headed by Idriss, were supposed to be the "moderate" rebels we could send war toys to and were supposed to represent the "moderate" rebels at the ever-looming peace talks.

Now, the Islamists stole our goodies and ran our boy out of Dodge.

The US remains at war in Syria, but we appear to be allied to a bunch of losers.

can stop enabling the shipment of weapons and flow of Islamic terrorists, this will allow the Syria military to finish off the one caught inside Syria. Or they can realize the invasion failed and surrender.

I hope this happens very soon so the civilians suffering in the brutal winter can get some relief.

Viva Syria

Turkey spurned by Europe is trying to expand it's influence. Edrogan is a danger to the region.

The second largest military in NATO cannot resist asserting itself.
