Interpreter at Mandela event: I was hallucinating

Source: Associated Press

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - The man accused of faking sign interpretation while standing alongside world leaders like U.S. President Barack Obama at Nelson Mandela's memorial service said Thursday he saw "angels" at the event, has been violent in the past and suffers from schizophrenia.

Thamsanqa Jantjie said in a 45-minute interview with The Associated Press that his hallucinations began while he was interpreting and that he tried not to panic because there were "armed policemen around me." He added that he was once hospitalized in a mental health facility for more than one year.

...

Jantjie, who stood gesticulating three-feet (1 meter) from Obama and others who spoke at Tuesday's ceremony that was broadcast around the world, insisted that he was doing proper sign-language interpretation of the speeches of world leaders.

But he also apologized for his performance that has been dismissed by many sign-language experts as gibberish.

there are drugs now that help these sort of things. Does SA have benefits for such cases? Of course, the fact he said he saw angels will give him a pass with all the religious right wing nutjobs.

let me first say I am an American and am TOTALLY speculating here. BUT from what I have seen here in this country and have heard over the course of my dozen or so trips over the last 2 years the ANC has devolved into an exclusive club of well connected people. It's a damn shame. The people of SA are BEAUTIFUL! I say that with the utmost sincerity, but as you saw when Zuma was booed at Madiba's memorial, this aint Madiba's ANC anymore. Zuma basically pulled off a coup to get Mbeki removed. That interpreter was probably some dude who knew somebody who knew somebody. Nobody checked him out because there was no open screening process. He didn't need credentials just a good friend in a high place. That's how they get down over here now. And the country has HAD IT with them. I am in Joburg right now and people are disgusted with the way the ANC is using Mandela's death as a political tool. BUT the ANC and it's relationship to Mandela almost guarantee their power. It's EXACTLY what Madiba was fighting. And whilst he lived they were too ashamed to really pull out all of the corrupt stops, but we shall see what happens now. In SA unfortunately like in the US, it is who you know. I hope hope hope that with the eyes of the world on SA that it somehow guilts them into coming correct for these amazing people. The elections in 6 months will be very interesting. Although the ANC will win. and whoever heads the ANC is president. That's how it works. People vote for the ANC because they are the party that freed them from apartheid. The loyalty is unshakable at present. That is why the ANC is always stating over and over that Mandela said he would be a member of the ANC until he died and after. Kind of how repubs say they're the party of Lincoln. Like yeah ok. The ANC are using the man. It is really sad. BUT if miracles happen anywhere in the world baby they happen in the RSA! I LOVE this country and its people and they have been through waaaaaay worse. They will prevail. VIVA SOUTH AFRICA!!!

It is their job to vet everyone who are in the immediate area of the President. They are not supposed to rely on anyone else to do this as some apologists have claimed. His entire detail should be fired as well as the Director. There has been scandal after scandal with these people and no one has been held accountable. Obama should fire them and send a message.

User name refers to a minor political office I held in Chicago. The SS is not supposed to be up on all the psychotics in SA but they are supposed to vet anyone within the immediate area of the President. What if this guy had attacked Obama as he easily could have. Would you have any criticism of the SS then or just say "that's the way it goes" ?

I doubt at even one yard away he would have gotten too fare in any sort of attack. I will bet he went through some sort of search prior to getting on stage

So what did you make of Bush ducking shoes in Baghdad? And this was in the Green Zone under SS and US military control.

I don't know if the reporters were vetted or not. The person that threw the shoes may not have had any history at all. Even if they were searched I guess you can't prevent someone from throwing shoes. And I am not saying everything can be prevented. JFK said a month before he was killed that anyone could kill a president if they are willing to die doing so.

This easily could have gone very bad, very fast.

Anyone that close to the President could have done major damage with even a common dinner knife before anyone could have reacted.

And I don't think it's a vetting problem. It's a planning problem. There have to be people in the federal service who can sign. The President should be traveling with his own trusted interpreters.

and the comment in response.

Deaf people have fought long and hard for communication access.

Is this supposed to be some kind of dig at the idea of major political and social events being accessible to Deaf people?

What's next, a jab at wheelchair ramps?

Then again, maybe I'm interpreting this incorrectly.

So please tell me what it is you meant to say.

no one is saying that there shouldn't be sign language interpreters at these events. no one is taking a shot at the deaf. this entire incident is absurd.

it was playing on the word 'gibberish', which would be spoken by, theoretically, the people of Gibber, the Gibbers.

DU is a freaking no fun zone.

A play on the very last word of the OP.

Sorry if I spoiled your fun, but yeah, some people take this very seriously, coming from a history of pretty intense discrimination and isolation.

Turns out not only was the guy having a psychotic break, but he isn't even a licensed sign language interpreter.

Makes you wonder, if the RSA can't get it together for an event of mega-visibility like this, what it must be like to be Deaf and have to go to an emergency room, or be a defendant in a criminal trial, or what have you, and have to deal with an "interpreter" like this. Imagine being seriously ill, or having a child who's seriously ill, and not being able to understand a word of what the doctors are saying. Imagine your freedom is on the line, and all you're getting is--to coin a phrase--"gibberish."

So while this may be fodder for jokes--and I understand the inclination--it's also pretty damn serious to lots of folks, which I hope you might understand as well.

The guy has the perfect translators serious tone.

"Help I need somebody, Help I need somebody, just anybody".

Jimmy Kimmel had an actual interpreter try and make sense of it and at one point he said "circle thingy".

anywhere near what was being said.

I use sign language with my dogs but I only know: sit, settle, search, walk, and stuff like that. (I had a deaf dog but use it now with hearing dogs because it works better for them, and it is great when you're on the phone.)
