Scholars’ Group Endorses an Academic Boycott of Israel

Source: New York Times

An association of American professors with almost 5,000 members has voted to endorse an academic boycott of Israeli colleges and universities, the group announced Monday, making it the largest academic group in the United States to back a growing movement to isolate Israel over its treatment of Palestinians.

The group, the American Studies Association, said that its members approved the boycott resolution by a 2-to-1 margin in online balloting that concluded Sunday night, with about a quarter of the members voting.

(crickets chirping)

Face it, Palestinians, (many of them,) will not be happy until all Jews are dead.

Because then they will have to concentrate on - gasp - running a country, providing jobs, educating, even collecting trash.

Shooting - into the air or across the border - praising martyrdom is so much more sexy.

(just in case..)

10. Since I doubt that there are many Israeli academics working on 'American Studies'....

this is a silly and empty gesture.

And what happens when other countries decide to follow suit and boycott America - and the UK - for what we've done in Iraq?

The Americans who invaded Iraq and Israeli's who abuse minorities have more in common with each other than they do with the Americans and Israeli's who speak out against such atrocities.

11. Just curious: how many Nobel prizes

have the members of this group won?

How many professors sharing their institutions published papers co-authored with Israeli researchers?

Oh, I forgot. They do not boycott individual researchers, only universities.

Talking about cutting one's nose, etc.

How exactly is this boycott going to be implemented? Prohibiting the productive professors from attending conferences in Israel? Prohibiting their productive professors from publishing papers with the name Jerusalem University, or Technion part of the papers?

By "productive" I mean individuals who actually spend their time and talent conducting research, not grazing their navels.

Come to think of it: how do DUers, who applaud this decision, envision this to be implemented?

15. Academic boycotts were part of the civil rights movement of South Africa

And were effective in moving moderates.

People want to be part of the first world, and part of the international community. These kind of actions may not be effective on moving people who are racist to the core but they can get people in the middle to pay attention and stop dragging their feet.

16. And what was the quality of academic research in S. Africa?
Sun Jan 26, 2014, 05:26 PM

How many Noble prizes were won by S. Africa? How many high tech and bio tech innovations and research were conducted in S. Africa? What kind of biomedical research was conducted by S. Africa? These are innovations that affect the quality of life across the world. But I doubt that you, or any of these "academicians" will refuse life saving medical treatment developed in an Israeli institution.

And even comparing Israel to S. Africa shows complete ignorance, navel grazing, laziness, inability or unwillingness to actually study the history of the area.

You are not who the boycott is trying to reach so don't worry about it.
