Gay couples wed in Utah after judge overturns ban

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A federal judge struck down Utah's same-sex marriage ban Friday in a decision that marks a drastic shift toward gay marriage in a conservative state where the Mormon church has long been against it.

The decision set off an immediate frenzy as the clerk in the state's most populous county began issuing marriage licenses to dozens of gay couples while state officials took steps to appeal the ruling and halt the process.

Cheers erupted as the mayor of Salt Lake City led one of the state's first gay wedding ceremonies in an office building about three miles from the headquarters of the Mormon church.

Deputy Salt Lake County Clerk Dahnelle Burton-Lee said the district attorney authorized her office to begin issuing licenses to same-sex couples but she couldn't immediately say how many had been issued.

2. When does the Full Faith and Credit clause apply to gay marriage?

Straight couples get married in one state, and move to another state, their marriage is not invalidated. Each state recognizes the validity of the laws of other states.

When is it going to happen when a gay couple in one of the now 18 states that legalize it move to a state that does not recognize gay marriage?

Doesn't the full faith and credit clause apply? Or am I living in bizarro world???

A judge in Dallas granted a gay married couple who had moved to Texas from another state, a divorce and the conservatives had hissy fits.

7. Who would have thunk it - if I had to list the order of when marriage equality would pass...

Utah would have been bottom on my list. Mind you 95% of the reason they would be down there would be the influence of the Mormons on that state. I saw what Mormons did to California and if they were that powerful to suppress civil rights for as long as they did in a state as large as California then I figured they would keep Utah in the dark ages for centuries.

What happened today in Utah was amazing and what's even better is the fact that the judge who did it has been praised in the past by right-winger himself Orin Hatch.

In the end the real winner was the Constitution where a judge actually read it and understand that we are all created equal. Congrats to everyone in Utah!

The state filed a notice of appeal late Friday and was working on a request for an emergency stay that would stop marriage licenses from being issued to same-sex couples.

"It will probably take a little bit of time to get everything in place," said Ryan Bruckman, a spokesman for the attorney general's office. He said the judge told the attorney general's office it would be a couple of days before any request for an emergency stay would be reviewed.
