Group Chastises President Obama’s Picks For Federal Court
Source: Georgia Public Broadcasting
ATLANTA
Reverend Joseph Lowery was among several civil rights and political leaders calling on President Obama to rescind his slate of nominations for the Bench in the Northern District of Georgia. They held a press conference on Monday at Ebernezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.
Reverend Joseph Lowery, Congressman John Lewis and Reverend C.T. Vivian, who are all recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, say the nominations for the Northern Georgia District bench lack diversity.
The civil rights leaders also say nominee Mark Cohen worked to support Georgias Voter ID laws, which they say are an effort to suppress minority voting. The coalition also opposes nominee Michael Boggs, who voted in the Georgia General Assembly to keep the Confederate Emblem on the state flag.
Reverend Lowery says those nominees will threaten the states progress toward equality for all.

Under the Constitution, a state's senators propose nominees to the federal bench for their state to the President.

(68,868 posts)I think the point they would make--especially now--is that the Georgia republican senators won't blue slip anyone to the left of Attila the Hun, so pick somebody that you want and screw them. The blue slip privilege died with the filibuster.

(28,552 posts)... there is a small handful of people here who will excuse any action or inaction Obama takes, no matter how Republican in nature no matter how plainly wrongheaded. I might not agree with everything you said, but it's clear to anyone with two brain cells that Holder is a hapless puppet and that history will not be kind to this Justice dept instance. It's also clear that Obama only campaigned as a progressive, he governs center right.

(68,868 posts)but it's not the point you think you are making.
Note: stating that Valerie Jarrett and Michelle Obama picked Eric Holder is something only the Sarah Palin/Duck Dynasty crowd believes. Not to mention the other Darrel Issa talking points.
When you start tripping over yourself to give a thumbs up to the President's most assholish critics on the far right, you tend to discredit your own criticisms.

(28,552 posts).... Obama, Barack on Holder and no one else and nothing I wrote would suggest otherwise.
Holder was but one of many cabinet picks that signaled clearly that Obama was done with his campaign and now ready to move to center-right.

(3,811 posts)and has aggressively challenged attempts by GOP dominated state legislatures to limit and restrict the people's right to exercise their right to vote, which is arguably our most important constitutional right. The Justice Department under Eric Holder has been successful in many of these challenges.
Do you dispute this, or agree?

(3,811 posts)including preposterous claims about various sinister conspiracies to undermine the United States and empower our enemies. He failed to prove any of his assertions of wrongdoing after almost a year of hearings and investigations.
The Justice Department cooperated with all appropriate oversight requests and produced hundreds upon hundreds of requested documents. In frustration over his inability to find evidence to support any of the preposterous extreme right-wing conspiracy theories, Issa began to issue ridiculously broad subpoenas for documents that he (Issa) knew he had no right to request, including legally-protected grand jury material and other sensitive information whose disclosure would endanger the American people or our agents investigating open cases, as well as material that was clearly and obviously irrelevant and unrelated in any way to the investigation.
Darryl Issa is a complete prick and the Fast and Furious farce, like most all of his hearings, was another example of the worst possible kind of misuse of congress's oversight power.
Fuck trolls.

(145,231 posts)I have a feeling that these nominees were selected in part because they were not objectionable by the Georgia GOP senators. The blue slip procedure lets the US senators block nominees.
