Bay Area federal judge picks get holiday freeze from GOP

Source: San Jose Mercury News

Before adjourning for the holiday, Senate Republicans left a few lumps of coal for three Bay Area federal judge nominees who were on the brink of joining the region's federal court system.

Republicans, still miffed by the Obama administration's elimination of filibusters to block confirmation of presidential appointees, refused to allow a customary floor vote Dec. 20 that would have sealed federal judgeships for Bay Area nominees Beth Labson Freeman, James Donato and Vince Chhabria.

As a result, the Obama administration will have to renominate the candidates in January, restarting the process despite them having cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this year and facing no substantive opposition.

...

Carl Tobias, a University of Richmond law professor who follows judicial nominations, called the tactic a "total waste of time," particularly given that it will leave the Bay Area federal courts short-handed for at least the first part of next year.
