A&E Welcomes Phil Robertson Back to 'Duck Dynasty'

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Less than two weeks after his anti-gay remarks prompted an "indefinite hiatus" for the reality patriarch, and a strong fan backlash, the network says he will remain on the series.
2:07 PM PST 12/27/2013
A&E
Phil Robertson, "Duck Dynasty"
Phil Robertson, the patriarch of A&E's Duck Dynasty clan who was suspended from his hit reality series on Dec. 18 following some incendiary comments about gay people, won't be put on hiatus after all.

The network and the Robertson family announced Friday that Phil will still be part of the series -- and since he didn't miss any filming, his temporary suspension will have no effect on the upcoming fifth season.

An A&E statement to The Hollywood Reporter [6] [6]read:

As a global media content company, A+E Networks’ core values are centered around creativity, inclusion and mutual respect. We believe it is a privilege for our brands to be invited into people’s home and we operate with a strong sense of integrity and deep commitment to these principals.

That is why we reacted so quickly and strongly to a recent interview with Phil Robertson. While Phil’s comments made in the interview reflect his personal views based on his own beliefs, and his own personal journey, he and his family have publicly stated they regret the “coarse language” he used and the mis-interpretation of his core beliefs based only on the article. He also made it clear he would “never incite or encourage hate.” We at A+E Networks expressed our disappointment with his statements in the article, and reiterate that they are not views we hold.

But Duck Dynasty is not a show about one man's views. It resonates with a large audience because it is a show about family… a family that America has come to love. As you might have seen in many episodes, they come together to reflect and pray for unity, tolerance and forgiveness. These are three values that we at A+E Networks also feel strongly about.

So after discussions with the Robertson family, as well as consulting with numerous advocacy groups, A&E has decided to resume filming Duck Dynasty later this spring with the entire Robertson family.

We will also use this moment to launch a national public service campaign (PSA) promoting unity, tolerance and acceptance among all people, a message that supports our core values as a company, and the values found in Duck Dynasty. These PSAs will air across our entire portfolio.

In addition, an A&E source says the family and the network are going to work together to promote tolerance moving forward.

Robertson's comments in GQ [7] magazine, which included the 67-year-old likening homosexuality to "bestiality," prompted an almost immediate announcement from A&E.

I barely ever go on there, but for this situation I did, and some wingers have taken exception to my opinion that that person is a misogynistic, racist homophobe. It's also apparently ok with them that he has advocated that men marry girls no older than 16 because by the time they are 20 they do nothing but "pick your wallet".

I have an acquaintance who is a born again right winger who adopted a black child and he is one of the biggest racists I know. Somehow, he sees through a filter that his child is OK but the rest of those blacks - well they are just lazy, shiftless, welfare cheats.
He vehemently defended George Zimmerman and remained completely oblivious to the fact that a hate crime could have just as easily been committed against his son. This man just boggles my mind...

insane revisionist history about things not being bad so during Jim Crow and insinuating that the continued existence of structural racism is myth.

Here's the thing about how you people react to stuff like this: unless there's proof that somebody burned a cross like five minutes ago, it's never appropriate to call out racism and we should all just shut the fuck up about it so nobody (who matters) feels uncomfortable.

A poster talked about how progressives in the media get fired for saying less then what the racist asshole Phil Robertson said. "why does everyone cave to right wing assholes yet we lose everytime. Keith, Cenk,Martin, everyone. Say one wrong word as a progressive you gone in 60 seconds. Be some sort of back wash, back water grit garggling, toilet water drinking, shit stained, squirrel eating, neanderthal, racist, bigot, inbred, wanna be hillbilly and spew hate and stir up the bottom of the barrel gun ,sucking morons and you are fine....no problem...... My point was the racist bigots go nuts and progressives don't.

This is the problem with the internet sometimes it's easy to misunderstand what someone means.

While racism and bigotry is still a big issue in this country this one family and one network, we cant lose of sight of the bigger fight in this which is rectifying inequalities in gay rights and african american rights in our countries laws. Hopefully it will play itself out and a&e will lose viewership and advertisements. We lost this battle but we can not get sidetracked on the bigger picture.
