WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange Calls on Computer Hackers to Unite Against NSA Surveillance

December 31, 2013 Video
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange addressed a major gathering of computer experts Monday at the Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg, Germany, calling on them to join forces in resisting government intrusions on Internet freedom and privacy. We play highlights from Assanges speech, as well as the one given by Sarah Harrison, the WikiLeaks member who accompanied Edward Snowden to Russia.
We also hear from independent journalist and security expert Jacob Appelbaum, who reveals a spying tool used by the National Security Agency known as a "portable continuous wave generator." The remote-controlled device works in tandem with tiny electronic implants to bounce invisible waves of energy off keyboards and monitors to see what is being typed. It works even if the target computer is not connected to the Internet.

Targeted Hacker Jacob Appelbaum on CISPA, Surveillance and the "Militarization of Cyberspace"
Computer security researcher Jacob Appelbaum argues the measures included in the proposed Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) would essentially legalize military surveillance of U.S. citizens. "When they want to dramatically expand their ability to do these things in a so-called legal manner, its important to note what theyre trying to do is to legalize what they have already been doing," Appelbaum says. He is a developer and advocate for the Tor Project, a network enabling its users to communicate anonymously on the internet, and has volunteered with WikiLeaks

does he even say "unwarranted surveillance" or does he deny our country's right to any national security?

(7,321 posts)It's been stated repeatedly, this is not about personalities.. it's completely about the issue.
But you already know that..
Your purpose here in this thread is to intentionally disrupt the object of discussion, as has been your M.O. in every thread on this topic for months if not longer.
EOM. EOD.

Geeze, they still don't get it......

(62,270 posts)You can do activism for other peoples funds, Wikileaks didn't have to literally manage the fund. We see how well that worked out with Manning, anyway, where she only got $15k of the $100k raised...
Just say, "Hey, the FBI got the lulzsec leader to turn so you should support all these other 30 people who are now going to jail for a decade." Link to their individual hactivist pages. Simple. But nothing. Nada. Wikileaks acted as if they didn't even exist.
What's to say that won't happen again. Hactivists can screw up.

http://www.democracynow.org/2013/7/31/bradley_manning_has_become_a_martyr
Julian Assange joins us via Democracy Now! video stream from the Ecuadorean embassy in London. He took refugee in the embassy in June of 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where hes wanted for questioning around sex assault allegations but has never been charged. He remains in the embassy there because the British government promises to arrest him if he steps foot on British soil. This is his first interview with a U.S. TV show since the Manning verdict.
We welcome you back to Democracy Now!, Julian Assange. What is your response to the verdict?
JULIAN ASSANGE: Thank you, Amy. First of all, I must correct you. I have been given political asylum in this embassy in relationship to the case that is in progress in the United States. Its a common media myth thats put about that my asylum here is in relation to Sweden. It is not. Here I am.

(39,171 posts)Avoids a potentially tricky trial that turns Assange into a martyr or sets him free. Keeps him off the front page for the 2014 elections.
Eventually he will leave the embassy - either he has a health emergency that requires hospitalization or a new Ecuadorian government decides it is in their best interest to kick him out.
Btw - it is diplomatic asylum not political asylum. That is why the UK is not legally obligated under international law to provide him safe passage.

What a scumbag he is.
Yeah, from his position he can call Manning a martyr - why doesn't HE follow suit?

THIS is what is dumbing down DU. This right here.
In 12 years on DU I've never had this many people on Ignore all at once. Seems I'll be adding a few more.

(67,782 posts)Oh, and by putting people on ignore you're basically doing what Assange, Snowden, and Greenwald did - run from responsibility and criticism.

(22,271 posts)Having said that, I'm sure if there's not one now that we don't know about, there will be. The level of discourse is so low here there's just nothing left to discuss anymore. So many good posters have left DU. What we're left with are those of us who've been here for a long time but are becoming terribly discouraged and, well, the new breed of DUers who wouldn't know intelligent discourse if it walked up and slapped them upside the head.

What Assange *should* call for is more Mannings and Snowdens to come forward to spill the beans (and not just the USA, but in every country)...Enough people do that, and intelligence/security services will cease to function...
