Four former New Orleans police officers who were granted a new trial in the post-Hurricane Katrina Danziger Bridge shootings will not get out of prison while the case is pending. A judge on Thursday denied their requests to eligible for bond while legal proceedings are pending.
One officer in the case, a former NOPD sergeant convicted of participating in a cover-up of the police shootings that killed two and injured four others, has already been released on bond. All five saw their convictions in the civil-rights prosecution scrapped after the trial judge found "grotesque" prosecutor misconduct unfairly tainted their case.
Former officers Robert Faulcon, Anthony Villavaso, Robert Gesevius and Kenneth Bowen were not able to persuade U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt to release them while federal prosecutors appeal his order granting the new trial.
Engelhardt denied the motion on the grounds of the seriousness of the charges against them.
