Corey Knowlton, who won auction to kill endangered black rhino, now fears for his life
By George Chidi
Saturday, January 18, 2014 18:16 EST

The winning bidder in a $350,000 auction for the right to kill an endangered black rhinoceros now says that death threats from the public have left him in fear for his life.

Corey Knowlton, a “hunting consultant” and co-host of the Outdoor Channel’s Jim Shockey’s The Professionals, was outed through social media as the winner of the Dallas Safari Club’s auction. The hunting club has said that all of the money would be given to Namibia for “anti-poaching patrols, habitat protection, research and other measures crucial for protecting populations of endangered black rhinos,” but nonetheless sparked the ire of some wildlife groups … and the denizens of the Internet.

Knowlton told Dallas’ ABC affiliate WFAA that he stepped up to bid at the club’s request after other high-dollar bidders backed away in the face of the controversy. Immediately after winning the bid, he began receiving threats to himself and his family, he said.

“The fact of the matter is, we raised $350,000 for the black rhino. It’s the most that’s ever been raised. It’s absolutely going to conservation. We’re not just going … here’s have a beer, find a rhino. It’s a scientific process to find the one that’s causing the most problems.”

I do think death threats should be investigated and prosecuted when possible. Though I find it hard to feel too sorry for someone when the threats could stop with a simple decision like saying "hey, maybe I'll just not kill the incredibly rare rhino." Sometimes backing down in the face of asshats is just the sensible thing to do.

If he really was interested in conservation, he'd just donate the $350,000.

Or is the Salvation Army now taking donations, and for every 10 bucks collected, you get to punch a bum? Yeah, thought not.

From your post:
"what the op didn't mention is that the conservatory wants to culll a particular Rhino out of the herd and is using the opportunity as a creative way to raise money to further their conservation efforts"

If humans truly want to "further conservation efforts", STOP KILLING THE ANIMALS!

Cull a particular Rhino? How do you think they survived all those years before humans started killing them? They "culled" the aggressor on their own. It's nature, not rocket science.

These people are a completely other type of being - not quite human.

He will fly to Namibia and get whisked to a luxury hotel in an air conditioned Land Rover. The next morning after a gourmet breakfast, he will be taken into the bush in his air conditioned Land Rover to a spot close to a rhino herd. He will be led to a spot by guides for a clear shot. He will look through the high tech scope on his high powered rifle, pull the trigger and kill the beast. He will then be led over to the dead animal to pose for a keepsake and then back to the luxury hotel for drinks and dinner.

At the very least, the guy should be given only a knife, a canteen and a map. Let him face down a black rhino with a stick he sharpened with the knife.

I see numerous hunters at my cashier job. Some of them are not good with guns or at hunting. They want a photo op with their kid or just tell their buddies they've been out hunting for two months.

$40,000.00 truck. 10 grand in guns, ammo, fuel, camo and other gear. That doesn't count the end I see as a cashier, $50 for energy drinks, $10 for Copenhagen, gas station food, beer and other items. Can't you just go to the store and buy some beef with cash like that? Some of them must have awful luck or be bad at hunting, because all I would need to do is go car camping at my old campsite in the woods for about 24 hours to get whatever game I wanted. I don't hunt or own a gun but its not that difficult to find game.

Its all about the thrill of the kill for some, or just succumbing to peer pressure. A dear old friend of mine was a hunter and he told me the last time he killed a deer it took a little piece of his soul. He said he was looking into its eyes when he shot it. He quit hunting then and there.

Sport hunting should be shamed out of existence, but the death threats to this guy are counterproductive. Now the rhino killer is a victim!

Oh well that's ok then.

I mean they won't' just kill any black rhino.

They will use SCIENCE to find a bad black rhino. Probably one that beats it's kids or uses the handicap spot illegally.

And here I was worrying that with so few black rhinos, the loss of even one could hurt the genetic diversity of the species. But clearly that concern isn't "science"
