U.S. studying possible rescue plans in case of crisis at Sochi Olympics

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - In the face of concerns about possible attacks by militants during the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, U.S. military and intelligence officials have been studying contingency plans for evacuating Americans from the games in case of a crisis.

But U.S. officials have concluded there would be major obstacles to mounting a large-scale effort by the military or other U.S. government resources to evacuate Americans from Sochi, said a source familiar with Obama administration debates.

The most formidable roadblock U.S. officials have discussed regarding contingency plans for Sochi is that Russian authorities have historically been reluctant to allow foreign military forces, especially those of the United States, on Russian territory.

"No matter what happens," the Russians "are not going to welcome with open arms" any intervention by outsiders, even in a situation where outsiders might only be seeking to rescue their own citizens, the source said.

U.S. contingency planners have also apparently determined that there are few ways to prepare and potentially position supplies or forces for a possible Olympics rescue because of Sochi's location, the source said.

Interesting info in the full article: Many think the attacks will happen outside of Sochi, if they do happen. Second, American sources are claiming Russia is not sharing info about the threats. The article is worth reading. It includes the quote by Angus King (I-Maine) that he doesn't think it's safe enough to take his family.

I care about contingency plans for evacuating Canadians.

First things first, that being the most worthy people first, y'know...

(ah, that was sarcasm...)

5. Russia is being hit by the same terrorists that the US is supporting vs Syria.

I mean US/Saudi backed terrorists, however laundered.

Yes, absolutely, I think the US and Russia should get on the same page in trying to calm down the incendiary situation - but that means the entire reasoning behind HRC's "Friends of Syria (tm)" movement should be totally rejected.

This insanely volatile shit isn't happening in the absence of foreign power military/economic backing, and those foreign powers have not grown out of the obsolete colonialist mentality that put in place all these pieces on the chessboard. Russia (or the former USSR) isn't the only bad actor.

7. If the Olympics were held in this country, would we allow the Russian military and their equipment

in this country, in case something happened?

Kinda doubtful. Anyway, we need to stop supporting "friendly" terrorists, and stop doing our own terrorism. The maybe the Olympics would not be such a high profile target.
You know, set an example for peace, instead of dealing death, for a change.

...that we haven't recently been passing laws that would put a subset of their athletes in a very specific kind of danger.

This is a tough, weird situation. I hope it goes smoothly for all involved, but there's a lot of tension over how fabulous we are as a nation, if you know what I mean.

religion, or those that dress like those of the wrong religion.
Putin's announcement, with the Olympics in the works wasn't very bright. All he did was to fuel the flames of the bigots and give another set of haters reason to act.

Does anyone really think America would welcome the Russian military descending on our country to rescue Russians? Ain't gonna happen.

Any Americans going to
Sochi are (or should be) aware of the perils.

Good thing the Russians had their military there to evacuate...oh, wait a minute

Risk is part of the price you pay for going to the Olympics, either as a competitor or spectator. It sucks, but it's not as if we haven't played a huge role in making it worse.
