U.S. Supreme Court Won't Hear Rowland Case
Source: Hartford Courant
The U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday denied a petition by former Gov. John G. Rowland to appeal a recent court decision awarding substantial damages to unionized state employees, who successfully challenged the former governor's layoff of 2,800 workers in 2003.
Rowland and his former state budget director, Marc Ryan, had been named as individual defendants by the union plaintiffs in the decade-old suit against the state.
Rowland and Ryan issued a statement saying that despite the rebuff by the high court, they will continue to pursue their taxpayer-funded court fight at the local, U.S. District court level where damages are to be assessed against the state.
Rowland and Ryan recently were pursuing their own request using outside attorneys whose fees have been paid by taxpayers for the Supreme Court to review the May 31 decision by the 2nd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. That was despite Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen's announcement last month that he was withdrawing his appeal to the Supreme Court.
