India: Woman gang-raped on orders of 'kangaroo court'

Source: BBC

Police in India's West Bengal have held 13 people in connection with a gang rape of a woman allegedly on orders of village elders who objected to her relationship with a man.

.......

"The relationship was going on for almost five years. When the man visited the woman's home on Monday with the proposal of marriage, villagers spotted him and organised a kangaroo court. During the 'proceedings' both the couple were made to sit with hands tied," Birbhum police chief C Sudhakar told the BBC.

He said the headman of the woman's village fined the couple 25,000 ($400; £240) rupees for "the crime of falling in love".

The man paid up, but the woman's family were unable to pay, police said.

The poor woman's family was too afraid to get her to the hospital for two days, I can't imagine her suffering.

Glad the 'headman' was also arrested.

We can't talk bad about India, that's just NOT RIGHT. We need to realize that this kind of "village WISEMEN" court could have happened in New York City or (fill in the blank) US city and the "traditional penalty" for non-conformity would have been FAR WORSE, and of course here unlikely to ever be investigated since we all know that US police are SATAN, while Indian police just take bribes to lovingly support their families.

I don't know what is wrong with people who don't realize that the US is far behind India on women's rights, we must NEVER EVER say anything that could take Indian practices or culture to task because women get raped in the US too, so we need to STFU. India is far ahead of us in taking care of women, they are #1 in the world in child brides, for instance, that makes little girls into good women and safe before they even reach puberty! We are sooo far behind. This story is just racism.

The US can suck in its treatment of women and other places can still be far worse.

Sad to say, nothing guarantees that anyone will be good.

You are reading this story because of what Indian government done.

Every rape story now gets maximum media attention and every rape case is now brought to justice even if the victim is not willing to testify. Rape in India is a non-bailable crime in most circumstances and penalties have been increased both for the police who don't follow procedure and register a crime and against the actual perpetrators, all the way to the death penalty if the victim dies and/or suffers serious bodily harm.

The government hopes that by giving wide publicity to every case and its outcome will serve as a deterrent in order to reduce the crime.

People seem to think that India is the only place where rapes occur because of this wide publicity for each case -- but India has no more rapes per capita than most countries.

For example, Military Sexual Assault Epidemic Continues To Claim Victims As Defense Department Fails Females

The US college campus rape statistics shows that 1 in 4 women in college will get raped. You can see the US campus rape statistics here.
