Obama to honor Gov. Beshear in State of the Union; Ky. Governor heads to DC
Source: WHAS-TV
In a salute to his controversial decision to implement "Obamacare" in Kentucky, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear will attend President Barack Obama's State of the Union address Tuesday night, seated with First Lady Michelle Obama in the U.S. House gallery.
"It's an honor that I never expected," Beshear told WHAS11, "but we're both thrilled with it."
Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear will also attend the speech yet will not be seated in the Mrs. Obama's box.

(5,167 posts)I'm not a Kentuckian, but observed the success KY had from the beginning.
As I understand it, the secret was simplicity.
They gave info on the plans first, then asked qualifying questions.
The sites that qualified first - state and federal- were the ones that had the most trouble.
Glad President Obama will recognize the KY governor for leading his state in this effort.

(10,111 posts)That will be the kiss of death for him I'm sorry to say. At least the people that could get some insurance benefits will have their insurance. However, the next governor I am sure will be a Republican and somehow get people to vote against their own interests.

(1,693 posts)And has said he will retire out of public life, so it won't hurt him. And Kentucky has only elected 1 republican governor in the past half century, so it's way too early to say this will hurt KY dems.

(10,111 posts)Hey,
Thanks for the information, I guess I should investigate a bit more instead of just posting! My own bias came through in presuming Kentucky had a history of Republican governors, I was clouded by the turtle man.

(83,985 posts)With more than 640,000 uninsured people, a legislature controlled by anti-womens health politicians, and two infamous opponents of Obamacare--Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul--representing the state in the U.S. Senate, getting access to affordable health care in Kentucky may not seem like a cake walk. But things are starting to look up for the state. Why? Because Health Care Hero, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear managed to accept Medicaid Expansion for the benefit of his states residents.
Kentucky stands alone as the only Southern state to have expanded its Medicaid rolls AND manage its own health care exchangetheres a reason its the top state for Obamacare enrollment. In a little over a month, more than 370,000 people have visited Kentuckys health care exchange site, with 50,000 people having started a health care application, 32,500 people having enrolled in health care coverage, and 28,000 people having enrolled in Medicaid. In fact, Kentucky is one of the states that stand to benefit the most from ObamacareMedicaid expansion in the state will reduce the number of poor people without insurance by 57.1%.
one of this would have happened without the hard work of Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear, who used his executive power to bypass the Republican-controlled state Senate, to expand Medcaid and set up health care exchanges. Beshear knows that politics shouldnt interfere with personal health care decisions. In his comments about expansion, he hit the nail on the head:
[These] are not political decisions. They are moral decisions Taking these steps will mean that, for the first time, every single Kentuckian will have access to affordable health care. Over the next generation, this will change the course of Kentuckys history"

Do I burst his bubble? wonders Reina Diaz-Dempsey, overseeing the operation. She doesn't. If he signs up, it's a win-win, whether he knows he's been ensnared by Obamacare or not.
