4 Shot at NC Church; Boy, 12, Critically Wounded
Source: ABC News
Police in a North Carolina town are searching for a shooter who sprayed a church playground with gunfire, striking four youths playing basketball and critically wounding a 12-year-old boy.
The Rev. James Gailliard at Word Tabernacle Church in Rocky Mount says the shooting happened Monday shortly before 6 p.m., as neighborhood teens played basketball on courts behind the sanctuary.
The pastor says he heard more than 15 gunshots and then held a boy shot in the head until authorities arrived.
The child was taken to a hospital by helicopter, where he remained in critical condition. Police said the others shot ages 13, 17 and 19 were treated and released.

Just another number to add to the sad gun violence statistic in this country. The NRA wins again...

(579 posts)Executive Order for what? Do you even know what an EO is? Because, judging by your nonsensical post, you have no idea what a Pres. can do via EO.

(3,596 posts)3-4 high-powered guns with high-capacity magazines, the 2nd Amendment is part of our Constitution.
A well-regulated militia, being essential to a well-ordered....... the right of the people to hold and bear arms shall not be abridged (paraphrasing).
The SCOTUS defined "well-regulated militia" as one that is well-trained but unfortunately the rest of the picture doesn't fall into line.
Under 10 USC 311, the U.S. militia is described as....
(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
(b) The classes of the militia are
(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.
Interesting women are not part of the militia so that would suggest that women, other than women in the National Guard, have no constitutional right to bear arms.
That said, the SCOTUS fucked up royally because there is no "training" for the militia. The militia as defined above, except for the National Guard and Naval Militia, are anything but "well trained". In order for the Court's logic to hold water everyone in the militia then must be regularly trained and drilled.
They got this so wrong on so many levels. First of all the U.S. Code was not in existence at the time the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were adopted. So we have no way of knowing what the Founders actually meant.

(39,171 posts)it points out that NC needs to get serious about gangs and illegal guns. Why don't you fix that problem first?
TBF
(32,060 posts)to seriously look at economic inequality in this country. Why do you think kids join gangs? They have very few prospects for a decent future so they go for what they view as the "easy" money. Public schools are being sold to the highest bidder (which is really their only shot out of poverty but they are not going to pay attention if it is simply daily standardized testing), minimum wage barely pays rent much less put food on the table, and prisons are run for profit so there is more interest in locking folks up than educating them.
Every damned day.
"Income inequality in the United States has grown significantly since the early 1970s, after several decades of stability, and has been the subject of study of many scholars and institutions. While inequality has risen among most developed countries, and especially English-speaking ones, it is highest in the United States.[9][10][11] Income inequality (as measured by the Gini coefficient) is not uniform among the states: after-tax income inequality in 2009 was greatest in Texas and lowest in Maine.
Most of the growth has been between the middle class and top earners, with the disparity becoming more extreme the further one goes up in the income distribution. A 2011 study by the CBO found that the top earning 1 percent of households increased their income by about 275% after federal taxes and income transfers over a period between 1979 and 2007, compared to a gain of just under 40% for the 60 percent in the middle of America's income distribution. Other sources find that the trend has continued since then. In spite of this data, only 42% of Americans think inequality has increased in the past ten years. In 2012, the gap between the richest 1 percent and the remaining 99 percent was the widest it's been since the 1920s. Incomes of the wealthiest 1 percent rose nearly 20 percent, whereas the income of the remaining 99 percent rose 1 percent in comparison."

I would submit that this is our biggest problem. Lack of funding for mental health, families being stuck in cycles of poverty, nothing to look forward to in the future.
Unfortunately when we add guns into the mix it only intensifies the problem.

(39,171 posts)I also think that the ATF can do a lot more to crack down on illegal guns.

(39,171 posts)I oppose registration and an AWB. I also support increasing the size of the ATF to go after illegal guns more effectively - dirty gun dealers are a huge source of illegal guns. I suspect our views on gun control overlap more then you are willing to admit.
But that's ok - I understand that fighting cultural wars is more fun on a discussion board.

(70,504 posts)Gailliard was in his office when he heard more than 15 gunshots and ran outside. Among those hit was 12-year-old Nyreek Horne, who the preacher said was shot through the head. He cradled the bleeding boy until help arrived.
"In our community, we do hear gunshots from time to time. But what was different this time was that it was so close and it was so many," Gailliard said. "I held him in my arms until the paramedics got there. He was shot in the eye and the bullet went out the back of his brain. He was struggling to breathe, but he was fighting."
