NY Cop Who Wished 'Muslim Commie' Obama Was Dead Gets To Keep His Job

Source: TPM

HUNTER WALKER – JANUARY 28, 2014, 6:05 PM EST

A police officer in Pleasantville, N.Y. found out this week he will get to keep his job despite creating a "Coon Trapper" Facebook page where he posted a racist rant about wishing President Obama was dead.

Pleasantville's Board of Trustees passed a resolution Monday that allowed the local police chief to discipline Officer Peter Burns with an approximately two-month suspension, sensitivity training, a psychological evaluation, the loss of vacation days, and a two year "last chance" probationary period, the Journal News reported.

Officer Burns apologized for the Facebook post, which he published on the "Coon Trapper" page on Dec. 11. According to the Journal News, Burns' post included the N-word and indicated he wanted to see the president dead.

“The fact that he (Obama) is still alive bewilders me,” Burns wrote. “Go die in a shallow grave you Muslim commie." After the post was shown to the police chief, Burns was suspended. He deleted his Facebook page the next day.

It's not going broke anytime soon. The average tax on a village lot is $18,000 a year. We're talking 50x100 feet. It's Westchester, proud home of the highest property taxes in the country!!

The police chief suspended him back in December when he first heard about the FB page and the town's Board of Trustees unanimously voted to back the police chief. So it sounds like neither the police chief or the town wanted this person back.

So what made them bring the guy back? Police union? Threats of a major lawsuit?

I've read the articles, no mention of a union. but this information about his Facebook page;

"The page’s settings were private, meaning only those who “friended” Burns had access to the Obama post and others on his Facebook page."

Strongly suggests one of his friends reported him.

instead of firing him.

The more I think about it, the more I think the town's lawyers and the police officer's lawyer reached an agreement to avoid a court case. I don't think the town liked it's chances in trying to justify to a jury firing a police officer for something he did and said in his private life and on the other side, the police officer and his lawyer decided that taking the suspension and other penalties was better then risking a jury siding with the town, which would end his law enforcement career with it's salary, pension and other benefits.

in this great land of ours by the keepers of the peace and upholders of the law. He is not an aberration. Like one poster on this thread stated, if a black police officer had said bush was a piece of shit and he wished he was dead, he'd still be in gitmo getting tortured.

“These statements undermine confidence in law enforcement, and they cast doubt on the ability of this officer to fulfill his sworn duties in a fair, unbiased manner,” said Mayor Peter Scherer, explaining the Board’s decision. “I want to be clear that the Village has no interest in political beliefs of its employees. We do, however, have a fundamental interest in ensuring that the statements and actions of our employees do not harm their ability to fulfill their responsibilities,” said Scherer. [Well that's okay then isn't it // snark]

Oh and look at this.............

The scandal came on the heels of another racially charged incident in Pleasantville, a comfortable suburb of about 7,000 people in Westchester County, some 30 miles north of New York City. In 2010, a Pleasantville police officer shot to death black Pace University student Danroy Henry Jr. during a disturbance after the school’s homecoming game.
Henry, 20, was unarmed and driving away from the brawl when officer Aaron Hess, who is white, opened fire. A grand jury cleared Hess of wrongdoing, saying Henry had tried to run down police — a charge Henry's family rejected.
A year later, the Pleasantville Police Benevolent Assn. gave Hess its Officer of the Year award.

Talk about saying one thing and doing another - Pleasantville [total misnomer] should hang a disclaimer on it's site - we are biased, racist and totally irresponsible when it comes to enforcing the law.

on his Facebook page. A commentator on this story notes---dated January 27 at 9:52pm--coon hunting is not about coons. Read the comment as it is pertinent IMHO:

......In 2009, three Harrison police officers were suspended and demoted after making lewd comments about then-Supervisor Joan Walsh and swapping racist jokes about Obama. Last year, 17 New York City cops were suspended for posting racist and offensive comments on a Facebook page devoted to the city’s 2011 West Indian Day Parade.

Those episodes, and similar incidents across the country, have prompted many police and government agencies to adopt social media policies for their employees. Pleasantville police do not have such a policy.

Burns’ Facebook profile page, which was deleted the day he was suspended, contained photos of Burns in hunting gear and camouflage, and included links to hunting and animal trapping websites. The page’s settings were private, meaning only those who “friended” Burns had access to the Obama post and others on his Facebook page.....

being openly and publicly racist really ought to disqualify someone from being a cop. If nothing else his superiors really should worry that this will be brought up in court if he abuses a minority and they sue. Did I say "if"? I meant "when".
