Illinois Bishop: Gay People Must Be Disciplined Like Children

Last edited Wed Jan 29, 2014, 11:18 PM - Edit history (2)

Illinois Bishop Thomas John Paprocki, who held a massive exorcism after marriage equality became legal in his state, believes that gay couples who get married need to be “disciplined” for participating in the “redefinition of marriage.”

“Certainly the redefinition of marriage is an opposition to God’s plan for married life,” Paprocki said of the exorcism in an interview with Life Site News. “So I thought that would be a fitting time to have that prayer, really for praying for God and his power to drive out the Devil from his influence that seems to be pervading our culture.

Bishop Tom Paprocki: Neither you, sir (individually) nor the Roman Catholic Church (collectively) control the CIVIL LAW of the United States of America.

The Catholic Church may refuse to marry those who reject its tenets and teachings--atheists, pagans, agnostics, those of other faiths, gays, lapsed Catholics, "uppity women", etc. No one is forcing the Catholic Church to marry "teh gays" in opposition to its own anti-gay teachings.

But the civil laws of a secular state are written (in theory) to provide social and economic justice to the widest possible majority. And since marriage (in the civil sense) is a legally-binding contract between two people governing the distribution and access to shared property and monies (among other things) it is entirely correct, proportional and just that the civil state allow LGBT people to marry.

Of course, there is the opposing view--trigger/sarcasm alert!--Satan loves faggots.

We hear ya, Tom Paprocki. It's just that we (post-Enlightenment humanists and/or progressive religionists that many of us are) don't believe you--and others like you--anymore.

Please dear Bishop describe the Bible's plan for married life.

The Old Testament especially is filled with multiple wives, concubines, slaves and the like. In the New Testament Jesus is quoted as really saying two things.....one is a man shall leave his family and unite with his wife and that divorce makes them both adulterers.

So if you believe that anything that violates prong one - i.e. man-woman marriage is worthy of an exorcism, then I'm sure you will be announcing your plans to exorcise all those divorcees.

I suspect you will be so much busier with prong #2 since about half if not more marriages in the U.S. end in divorce and heterosexual couples engage in serial monogamy. Fags and lesbians (I can use the term fag because I am a gay may) make up anywhere from 1% to 10% of the population, depending on whose statistics you trust and only a small percentage of them will ever marry.

So I expect the RCC to place Divorce up there with Abortions and Gay Marriage. I expect you will protest all state legislatures to pass laws to stop divorce and will have your minions standing outside the respective courts where divorces are granted with the same signs that you have outside of clinics that provide women's reproductive health care.

When these types speak of discipline and children I immediately suspect them of pedophilia or their own sexual peccadilloes. I am not accusing him of this just saying that my mind immediately raises the question of the individual's own personal history and situation.

The Catholic Church hasn't had a really first class dungeon master since Torquemada slipped his wind. This new one's first subject should be Bishop Paprocki. Toss him into a pool of Holy Water. If he drowns he didn't need discipline, if he floats, he does, but either way he's an asshole.

...at the idiocy that comes out of the mouths of 'religious' leaders.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am not a huge fan of the whole 'religion = Truth' philosophy of life, and the notion that some omnipotent being conveys his/her instructions to a select few who then disseminate those instructions to the rest of us, and if we don't follow those instructions then we're sinful... just... nope.

Guess what, Bishop? You do not get to define marriage. You can call it whatever you want inside your local franchises, but "Marriage" is like Kleenex, the window for making it a trademark is long gone. Maybe "Catholic Brand" marriage is open?

“To be opposed to the redefinition of marriage and to be opposed to things that are sinful, that’s actually a very loving thing,” he continued. “Perhaps it’s the permissiveness of our society that people think that if you don’t get what you want that you’re somehow being hateful, if you don’t give them what they want. But sometimes, like any good parent will tell you, that sometimes you have to discipline your child, sometimes you have to say no. And sometimes, you even have to punish.”

But to “punish” gay families is actually quite loving, according to Paprocki. “And when a parent does those things towards their children,” he concluded, “they’re actually being very loving by correcting them and showing them the right way to do things.”
