Second Raiderette joins suit against team over wages

Source: SF Chronicle

(02-04) 11:04 PST OAKLAND -- A second Raiderette, a member of the Oakland Raiders cheerleading squad for the last four years, joined a suit Tuesday accusing the National Football League team of failing to pay its cheerleaders minimum wages and illegally requiring them to pay expenses out of their $125-per-game salary.

The proposed class-action suit was filed Jan. 22 in Alameda County Superior Court by a one-year Raiderette who identified herself as Lacy T., following the team's policy of withholding cheerleaders' last names for security reasons. She was joined Tuesday by Sarah G., a member of the squad since 2010.

Both say their salary of $125 per home game, or $1,250 per season, works out to less than $5 an hour, counting all the hours of unpaid work on rehearsals, performances at 10 charity events each season and participation in the team's annual swimsuit calendar photo-shoot, plus the costs of traveling to those events. California's minimum wage is $8 an hour.

The suit also alleged that the Raiders impose arbitrary "fines" on the cheerleaders for such offenses as bringing the wrong pom-poms to practice. Sarah G. said she was once fined $10 for not turning in her written biography on time.

So the NFL gives the calendars away for free? Is the NFL making a profit on these calendars? The women who model in it are owed some money.

"unpaid work on rehearsals, performances at 10 charity events each seasonand participation in the team's annual swimsuit calendar photo-shoot, plus the costs of traveling to those events"

REVOKE the NFL's NON PROFIT STATUS!

Oh my goodness! Our good heroes, US gladiators, using women for profit? Anonymous meat on display? Not sharing the returns fairly? Taking unfair advantage????

Inconceivable!!!!!!

Each team is a for profit corporation or private entity that pays taxes,
except the Green Bay Packers which is a co-op owned by shareholders.

I just want everyone to understand that it's the league that is nonprofit,
not each nindividual team.

I also believe that every professional team should privately own the
facilities they use for practice and for games. This way it ties the teams
to their community and makes it harder to leave to a city with the
highest bribe.
