PM Antonis Samaras wants to visit a 'new Hanukkah' against the Greeks, leftist candidate for governorship says on his Facebook page.
A politician from the main opposition party in Greece has caused an uproar after posting an anti-Semitic rant on his Facebook page accusing the Greek prime minister of heading a Jewish conspiracy.
Theodoros Karypidis, the left-wing Syriza Partys candidate for governor of Western Macedonia, said Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras was at the head of a Jewish plot to visit a new Hanukkah against the Greeks.
At the heart of Karypidis theory was a move last year by Samaras to shut the allegedly corrupt Hellenic Broadcasting Authority and replace it with the New Hellenic Radio and Television, known by its Greek acronym NERIT.
According to Karypidis, NERIT is derived from the Hebrew word for candle, ner, which he links to the festival of Hanukkah.

(69,014 posts)What is funny is that the goose is Egyptian, the golden goose of the sun from our nursery tales. It was the Egyptian festival of light. All sorts of people have a festival of light. But the Jewish people have this odd habit of grabbing festival names with IE roots.

(45,984 posts)I don't know anything about Karypidis. I have never heard of him until now. What would make anyone think he's a leftist? This is racism, specifically antisemitism, which is by definition a right wing characteristic. It presumes that some groups of people are by nature or divine providence better than others and that Jews are not entitled to a place in the rarefied positions in society. If to be a left winger is to embrace the principles of democracy and egalitarianism, then there is no room for antisemitism in any left wing movement.
Let's see, Karypidis is asserting that the Greek Prime Minister is part of a Jewish conspiracy because he wanted to replace the present Hellenic Broadcasting Authority with a new one and call it by an acronym that Karypidis claims to be derived from a Hebrew word. Not only does this not make any sense at all, but it is the kind of sophistry that we have come to expect from Glenn Beck at his blackboard.
