Now Bill Nye Is Going To Debate A Climate Change Denying Congresswoman

Source: TPM

TOM KLUDT – FEBRUARY 14, 2014, 1:32 PM EST

Bill Nye spent the 1990s providing science lessons to America's youth. Now he's pushing back against the country's know-nothing adults.

Nye will continue his crusade against misinformation this Sunday on "Meet the Press" with a debate against proud climate change denier Marsha Blackburn , the Republican congresswoman who serves as the vice chair of the House Energy & Commerce Committee.

The host of the once popular after-school staple "Bill Nye the Science Guy" took on committed creationist Ken Ham earlier this month in a debate over the origins of humanity.

These Creationists are trying to get the average Christian to buy-in to this particular fantasy. They hope the average Christian is too scientifically illiterate to understand much past "God did it".

Nye takes a somewhat popular science approach. His examples aren't all that complex. He's personally non-threatening.

A Creationist isn't going to change their mind, and Nye doesn't try to get them to change. He simply provides better answers to real questions that the average Christian, with limited science background, can follow.

The Creationists think they can punch holes in evolution, but they can only do that if there isn't some one there to respond. In addition, some one like Nye can punch endless holes in Creationism, and most Christians can see it.

No one is going to change the minds of those who are already lost.

I don't think he necessarily plans on changing anyone's mind but to introduce the truth
to those whose mind's haven't been closed off yet.

He definitely will catch the attention of younger watchers/listeners because of
his somewhat animated style.
The truth only hurts if you let it.

ps my grandson and I listened to a recording of the last debate together.

Not sure Nye is giving her time and attention so much as the program is. What are they going to debate next week...the existence of unicorns?

Notice the venues Nye is going through here - very public, watchable venues, rather than closed-door debates. He's probably not going to change his opponent's mind... but he knows his shit, will present easily researchable evidence, and phrase it simply enough that the at-home audience can follow... and his opponent will try the gish gallop, scoff, and basically stick their fingers into her ears the whole time.

Nye can only win - either the impossible is achieved and his opponent has a change of mind... or not, and she just looks like a bloviating fool in front of multitudes.

it's really the opposite of a standard closed-door debate, where the audience is much smaller, and just being on stage elevates the idiot's position, allowing them to claim "victory" no matter what, without a multitude of recordings to show otherwise.

debate then it could be ok. If it becomes a talk over you match then don't debate. If they start talking over you then point it out and refuse to go further.

At least it would be a fight between two people roughly on the same level and we would hopefully see scientific explanations rather than political opinions.

Seriously - this is a bad idea. Public debates are the wrong forum for discussing scientific issues. It was foolish to debate Ham on creationism, and it would be foolish to debate someone like Jenny McCarthy on vaccines.

And it wasn't foolish to take on Ham. Ham got dragged over hot coals, and even his idiot loyalists recognized that (though probably translated it into Nye being am eanie-head or something.)

What nye is doing is dragging htem from under their rocks and letting the public watch these morons bludgeon themselves in the face.

Yes they all look like fools when he is done with them, but none of them or their faithful flock will change their minds.

I would rather he go back to educating our youth, get them before they are so warped in to the mindless bots their parents and the media will make them.
