Polar Vortex to Bring More Snow on Return to U.S. This Week

Source: Bloomberg

By Ann Koh and Lars Paulsson Feb 24, 2014 5:40 AM ET

Another blast of freezing air is forecast for the central and eastern U.S. this week as two storms threaten to bring disruptive snow to the Northeast.

“Arctic air looks to make a return to the Northeast and Midwest this week following some of the warmest weather the regions have had so far this year,” AccuWeather Inc. said on its website. “Much of the Northeast and Midwest will be dry and noticeably colder on Monday.”

Temperatures are dropping as the polar vortex, a mass of cold air that is usually kept above the Arctic Circle by strong winds, drops southward. They may slide to a record low in the High Plains, the upper Midwest and Great Lakes, according to the weather service.

“A series of quick-hitting disturbances” will spread some snow across the Midwest and Northeast through Feb. 25, AccuWeather said on its website. Meteorologists are monitoring whether a storm moving through the Midwest meets with another traveling across the South, potentially bringing “disruptive” snow to the Northeast starting Feb. 26, the forecaster said.

as it happens I had to water already twice and heavily this winter to keep trees and bushes alive! And it is a bit better to have a lot of moisture than the drought in California.

12. California drought: Rain coming Wednesday, Friday but won't help much
Mon Feb 24, 2014, 02:59 PM
Feb 2014

(02-23) 16:40 PST -- It really looks like Northern California should receive a double dose of rain later this week - and it really won't have any real impact on the parched larger picture.

Two relatively large storms are expected to roll our way, one on Wednesday evening and one on Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Together they should drop several inches of rain on the lower elevations of the Bay Area. Portions of the North Bay could receive several inches more.

But even if rainfall is on the high side of expectations, the Bay Area will come in at or below its average precipitation for February, said meteorologist Duane Dykema. That means there will have been no headway in emerging from drought conditions that made 2013 the state's driest calendar year on record.

"All this helps, especially in the short term," Dykema said. "In terms of water supply, it doesn't make a big difference."

According to Dykema, Friday's storm is likely to be accompanied by strong winds.

"There could be some power lines down," Dykema said. "This should be the type of wet windy storm that's typical for this time of the year - except that we haven't had any."

13. Thanks looks like the old 'used to be wetlands, lakes & sequoia trees' Kern county is doomed

my little piece of kern is about right here 35.717195,-119.591374. You can see it's still green from the mist off the national park 'wetland' and the water that seeps from the water canal & the parks wetlands.

Wish California would at least passively bring in lots of sea water to increase moisture in the air & soil and plant trees/grass again.

the people who will be effected by the next series polar vortex storms. If this drought continues for a another year, then we will have real problems. Right now we just can't water the lawn. I feel sorry for some of the family farms, but not the huge corporate farms.
