Radioactive water from Japan's Fukushima power plant reaches Canada
Source: UPI
Researchers say radioactive cesium isotopes from Japan's severely damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant have made their way to the waters just off the coast of Canada.
Scientists confirmed the arrival of radioactive Fukushima water at the annual American Geophysical Union's Ocean Sciences Meeting in Honolulu today, but pointed out that the concentrations of the two isotopes were still well below safe drinking levels.
Researchers from the Bedford Institute of Oceanography have been continuously sampling water off the coast of Vancouver, British Columbia, since 2011.
These levels are still well below maximum permissible concentrations in drinking water in Canada for caesium-137 of 10,000 becquerels per cubic metre of water -- so, its clearly not an environmental or human-health radiological threat, Bedfords Dr. John Smith told BBC News.

(2,749 posts)We are going to Hawaii fairly soon. I wonder if we'll come home glowing from swimming in Hawaiian waters.

(60,010 posts)they said below maximum levels.
they did not say "below minimum safe levels."
As if there is any safe level of cesium in my glass of water.

(26,783 posts)They aren't even close.
The EPA's drinking water limit is just under 7500 Bq/M3 (and even that is a tiny fraction of the overall radiation in seawater)... the reported readings off Canada were low-single-digits. Roughly 1/10,000th of the naturally-occuring radioactivity in the sea.

(29,503 posts)entirely consistent with your history and agenda here on DU, and I'm not going to dignify it with a substantive response.
FBaggins
(26,783 posts)there wasn't a "substantive response" possible... so you'll have to settle for bluster.

(39,909 posts)...or so the "experts" on DU told us.
Have you noticed that whenever there is a new release of radioactivity in our environment,
all the experts are quick to tell us that this incident is below a thresh hold that can cause harm to us.
They will say stuff like:
"This is less radioactivity than you receive from a dental x-ray!"
What if I already had two dental x-rays this year?
Exposure to radiation is CUMULATIVE,
and ANY release of radiation at ANY level always ADDS to what we are already exposed to.
The LESSON of Fukushima
As long as we continue to use Nuclear Power,
Fukushima and worse WILL happen again,
and again,
and again.
Man has never produced a Fail Safe machine.

(13,685 posts)It is now pervasive.
It is everywhere now.
Our cup runneth over with radiation from man made transuranics.
And we are building new plants and stockpiling more waste. Everyday a little more leaks. Everyday a little more gets into the water and the air.
It is a crime beyond belief and is way too expensive, for we, nor any life on this planet can afford more man made radionuclides. The medical science is quite clear. The environmental science is quite clear. Constant, pervasive radiation kills. Some organisms may adapt and find a niche in which they can evolve, but most will just perish.
Sad what we have done and are doing with no end in sight.
