Pennsylvania's Republican governor faces tough re-election: poll

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - More than half of Pennsylvania voters say Governor Tom Corbett does not deserve to be re-elected in November, while a crowded field of potential Democratic challengers stack up well against him, according to a poll released on Wednesday.

Corbett, a Republican who came into office promising to slash government spending, is widely seen as among the most vulnerable on a slate of fiscally conservative governors elected in 2010.

According to the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, only 36 percent of voters approve of Corbett's job performance as governor. A sizable majority disapprove of his handling of the economy, education and government spending, the poll found.

Meanwhile, a crowded field has emerged to challenge Corbett, with businessman Tom Wolf as the clear front-runner, Quinnipiac found. "Today, Gov. Corbett might tie a few possible Democratic challengers, but he beats no one," said pollster Tim Malloy. "We have eight months and change, and we don't know what kind of damage Democrats will inflict on each other in a primary campaign, but Wolf is the man of the hour."

Tom Wolf is the front runner because he's flooded TV with $10 million worth of ads from his own money in the last few weeks.

Allyson Schwartz is more than likely going to be the nominee.

It has been decades, maybe back in the 50s since a Pennsylvania governor has lost re-election.

Our governors serve two terms and that's that. For some reason we are very forgiving and always let the guy do another term, no matter how much he screwed up the first one. It's time for us to break out of that mold.

I don't know who Tom Wolfe is, but I hope he's good enough to reverse the two-term trend.

The state assembly was asking the Democratic AG when she planned on getting something out... and she did argue that one big problem was that in 2011, Corbett changed the records retention policy and ordered purging of records after some "x" (very short) period of time, so this has hampered the investigation....

and many Democrats - at least on the voter-rich eastern side of the state where Philly & Scranton is, had no idea who the hell Dan Onorato, the Democratic candidate was (Chief Executive of Allegheny County - which is where Pittsburgh is on the western side of the state). He barely set foot over here in the east. If anything, a huge turnout from over here can win a state (no rethug has won PA in a Presidential election since 1988).

Just have to get people riled up to turnout (which is why they pushed so for that stupid Voter ID Law here).

in PA did its usual nonexistent job of supporting their candidate.

I am from PA and have read the Corbett poll numbers and I would still bet half a paycheck he gets reelected. It actually astounds me that his numbers are as low as they are, given that he pretty much did what he said he would do. If you voted for him, you should like how he turned out. Provided of course you knew what you were voting for. It seems to me that the only people he should be pissing off are people who didn't vote for him in the first place. Them, and the people driving across the major bridge when it collapses and dumps everyone into the water.

That's only if Rob McCord decides to bow out and Clinton comes here to stump for Allyson (along with Rendell) and it becomes the "year of the woman" here.

McCord has won a state-wide office where Allyson hasn't. And she would really need to get over to the western side of the state to campaign because they probably have no idea who she is. She is my sister's rep and has done alot for the city in general, but with McCord jumping in, that just made it harder. Of course Tom Wolfe's hilarious ads help him as well...

We are already pissed that our needs are routinely ignored in Harrisburg. Schwartz, McCord, or Wolfe needs to get a presence here if they're going to get the vote.
