Hispanic lawyers pull conference from Arizona
Source: Associated Press
The Hispanic National Bar Association says it will cancel its 2015 convention in Phoenix over legislation adding protections for people who assert their religious beliefs in refusing service to gays.
The lawyers association becomes one of the first groups to pull an event from that state.
President Miguel Alexander Pozo says the groups board of governors voted unanimously not to hold its national convention in Arizona. He says, quote, It is imperative that we speak up and take immediate action in the presence of injustice.

A Simple Game
(9,214 posts)Better move them out to six years.
It's a football game, even I could make it a super duper extra fancy one if given one years advance notice. The extra notice is to eliminate any conflict with conventions and such. They wouldn't ever be stupid enough to book the talent more than a few months out. Extra room for media would be a slight concern, any large venue stadium could handle it on a very short notice. The main concern would be hotel room availability.
I may be wrong, educate me please.
Oh and I would be cute because I would be able to design my own hat with the correct teams and everything. I heard they know the teams 4 years in advance.
former9thward
(31,973 posts)Of course, if necessary, they could move it. But it is my belief they are bluffing with their statement. I actually hope they do move even if the bill is vetoed. That will show everyone they weren't bluffing. We will see if they do that.
Mr.Bill
(24,274 posts)because they would not make MLK day a state holiday.
former9thward
(31,973 posts)Also the 1993 SB is not what a Super Bowl is now.
ChazII
(6,204 posts)it wasalso put to vote of the people. It was not only the legislature that denied a state holiday for MLK. The second time it was put up for a state wide vote it was passed. However, the legislature did screw up but not letting it stay in committee.
November 6, 1990 Arizona voters rejected Proposition 301 which would have established the third Monday in January as Martin Luther King, Jr./Civil Rights Day, a paid holiday for state employees and would have made Columbus Day an unpaid observance on the second Sunday in October. Arizona voters also rejected by a narrow margin Proposition 302 which would have established the third Monday in January as Martin Luther King, Jr./Civil Rights Day, a paid holiday for state employees and retained Columbus Day as a paid holiday on the second Monday of October. (Pat Flannery "King Day Narrowly Defeated: Angered Backers Cite Report on CBS" Phoenix Gazette, November 7, 1990, p. A1).

(24,274 posts)My only point was there is precedent for the NFL changing the location of the Superbowl for political reasons. I have no doubt they would do it again.
rhett o rick
(55,981 posts)Ok, leave it and hope the fans and players will overlook AZ bigotry.
former9thward
(31,973 posts)I am not the NFL. But the point is they are bluffing and everyone knows it. And why just the SB? Are you proposing that professional sports games only be played in states that have laws banning sexual orientation discrimination laws? That would be a minority of states.

(46,192 posts)nope. they moved it to California, and a just one year before.
you love being wrong, well, you don't like when someone corrects you.
because my correction helps people here realize that it can be moved on short notice.
and you want them to think it's impossible.
nice game but you lose.
former9thward
(31,973 posts)They pulled in in 1991 not 1992. And if you think the SB is the same now as it was almost 25 years ago you are dreaming. They were bluffing but I wish they weren't. I would love to see them try and move it.

It will hurt for a while, but it will sink the radical conservatives that dream these stupid laws up for good, at least in Arizona.

(1,269 posts)It TX it's getting near impossible to have an abortion. In 18 years, there will be a lot more blacks, hispanics, and in general, poor people at their polls. Just waiting for those numbers to sink in for the righties.
I saw a graph once that showed the perfect parallel between crime and the beginning of abortion rights. Exactly 16 years after it was allowed, crime took a deep dive, everywhere.
Once of these days the light bulb will go on in TX. Glad to see the Hispanics leading the way on this one.

(999 posts)I think Brewer is going to walk away from this bill and let the courts handle it. She doesn't have the resolve to deal with the wing nuts in her party and she can tell the left that she didn't sign the bill. As for the Super Bowl the NFL can move that game very quickly. You have Miami, New Orleans, Houston among other cities that could quickly gear up for an event that is just under a year away. Money talks and unfortunately the people of Arizona are going to pay for this lunacy but at the same time they voted for these fools and this is what you get. Elections have consequences.
