UN Envoy Forced Out Of Crimea By Hostile Pro-Russian Crowd

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine, March 5 (Reuters) - A U.N. special envoy was forced to abandon a mission to Ukraine's Russian-occupied Crimea region on Wednesday after being stopped by armed men and besieged inside a cafe by a hostile crowd shouting "Russia! Russia!"

A reporter for Britain's ITN television, James Mates, said the envoy, Dutch diplomat Robert Serry, had taken shelter in the cafe to escape the armed men who stopped him. He agreed to leave Crimea to end the stand-off.

A Reuters photographer saw him being escorted by police through a crowd of about 100 angry demonstrators, some waving Russian flags, near the headquarters of a foreign observer mission.

Saw that unfold in real time over on Twitter via James Mates. Interesting, and appalling.
I have yet to see anyone armed approach any of the I'm-not-a-Russian soldiers in Crimea. Which is smart. No one is giving them any excuse to start a shooting war. I don't know if nonviolent resistance would work here, but it beats the other by a mile.

Ukrainian officials reported earlier Wednesday that Serry had been kidnapped. But Jan Eliasson, the U.N. deputy secretary-general, denied that. Eliasson said Serry was threatened by the armed men as he was leaving naval headquarters in Crimea, but was not abducted.

their language is interesting. I have to dash, but this leaked conversation needs more attention/dissection. But the up shot, it just reveals how much we spite our nose when we meddle /engineer elections and domestic affairs in other countries, and gosh didn't anyone learn any lessons with Karl Rove's "democracy" in Georgia back in 2008? All these efforts have been going on for decades but got ramped big time during dubya's regine.. Karen Hughes lead this effort big time.. probably involved in this too. I don't know..
