Obama Urges Putin In Phone Call To Accept Terms Of Diplomatic Solution For Ukraine
Source: REUTERS
WASHINGTON, March 6 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama urged Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday to accept the terms of a potential diplomatic solution to the Ukraine crisis in a phone call that lasted an hour.
In their second phone conversation in the past six days, Obama emphasized to Putin that Russia's incursion into Ukraine was a violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, the White House said.
During the call, Obama outlined the terms of a diplomatic "off-ramp" that U.S. officials are promoting. Under terms of the deal, Russia would pull back troops to bases in Crimea, allow international monitors in to ensure the rights of ethnic Russians are respected and consent to direct talks with Ukraine officials.

(9,893 posts)If Putin called, he may be thinking of dealing.
It seems as though the EU might want to go for stronger sanctions considering the general tone of the situation in Crimea. The business with harassing the UN delegate, blockading Ukrainian naval bases, refusing to allow OSCE delegates into the region may have alarmed the EU more than Putin thought.

(4,856 posts)She's connected with all those Wall Street sharks so she probably has got wind of which way they are thinking of investing their interests. They most likely fully understand that Russia has the upper hand due to their control of 30% of Europe's oil needs. This is a reverse Pearl harbor scenario. Russia is the one who can cut off the oil and hurt their pocketbooks. Wall Street is also fully aware of Russia's new deal with the Far East, North and Sub Saharan Africa and South America. Plus the Russian South Stream pipeline comes online in 2015 through Romania to Southern Europe which incidentally seems to be staying out of the fray.

No, I bet he didn't say anything about any of that.

But don't take my word for it, just wait around for a decade or so until the history of our latest coup is written.
BTW: Who are you suggesting has "loyalty" to whom, and to what? I believe in democracy, and I detest fascistic coups against democratically elected governments. I don't have to pretend to believe in what I really believe in. Nor do I have to slander those I disagree with because I can't defend my side of an argument.

Indeed, the fact that the vast majority of Ukraine's elected representatives voted to impeach and remove the glorious Yanukovych after he abdicated his office is irrelevant because rt.com says so.

I'm not in the mood to be lectured by those who attack civil rights activists out of loyalty to a rightwing authoritarian bigoted foreign government.
I favor civil rights over love of Putin's government. We have an irreconcilable disagreement there.

(10,575 posts)Report: President Obama misses national security meeting on Russia, Ukraine
According to a White House official, President Obama's national security team met Saturday to discuss the situation with Russia and the Ukraine. Obama, however, was not present, the Weekly Standard said.
"The President's national security team met today to receive an update on the situation in Ukraine and discuss potential policy options. We will provide further updates later this afternoon," said a statement tweeted by Time magazine's Zeke Miller.
"Obama did not attend the meeting, but WH official says he has been briefed by Susan Rice and his national security team," Miller said in another tweet.
According to the Associated Press, Obama spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a 90-minute telephone call on Saturday, where he reportedly called Russia's actions "a clear violation" of Ukraine's sovereignty.

(10,575 posts)The decision surprised his own advisers, who had not proposed voluntarily seeking lawmaker approval and had concluded Obama had the legal authority to take action on his own. But Obama felt it would be more consistent with his desire, stated earlier this year, to take America off of a "perpetual wartime footing" by getting the backing of Congress and the citizens it represents.
After his walk with McDonough, the president called National Security Adviser Susan Rice, her deputy Tony Blinken, senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer, and others into the Oval Office to announce his approach.

I don't recall the WS being concerned with all the time W was not at a meeting -- and he obviously missed some.

(10,575 posts)it was W.
The question is, who is tweaking the information, who can you trust ? Are you getting real intelligence and then manipulate it?
Or are you in the dark from the beginning?
Are people in direct talks/briefings with the president trying to influence him and he therefore tries to get the information in written form? In this way he can check it with more trusted officials or officials that are in agreement with his beliefs.

Aides say there is no evidence to suggest an in-person briefing is any more or less efficient or effective than the presidents consuming the material electronically or in print.

(59,510 posts)It was very clear that the US analyzed the data AFTER the fact - in fact, had they analyzed it in real time and understood it, it would have been unthinkable that they did not move to stop the incipient attack. Hersh, who did excellent reporting in Vietnam really was on shaky ground on Syria. (You might have noticed the UN made stronger comments this week that their analysis of the gas showed it matched the government's gas. )
By the way, your comment really did not relate to what I said.

As in the Israel/Palestine conflict, we are not a disinterested party.
A lot of our bases in Central Asia and even the war in Afghanistan are about taking control of Russia's oil and gas business, or at the very least, controlling the transfer of their fuel to the rest of the world.
