Ford Answers Cadillac's Classist and Greedy Commercial
Source: Huffington Post
A new commercial advertising Fords C-MAX hybrid car (watch above) seems to have been produced with the goal of undercutting a recent Cadillac ad that drew criticism for having an overly consumerist message. Cadillac's ad, titled "Poolside," featured actor Neil McDonough condemning other countries for taking long vacations, while praising Americans for being crazy, driven, hard-working believers who do it all for stuff.
Ford's ad, however, champions an entirely different message, despite using almost all the exact same camera shots. It features Pashon Murray, the founder of Detroit Dirt, a group that collects compost and promotes urban farming. Murray praises hard work not for material gain, but in the name of progress.
Were crazy entrepreneurs trying to make the world better, Murray says in the ad, similarly titled "Upside." Its pretty simple. You work hard. You believe that anything is possible, and you try to make the world better."
Based on the similarity of the scripts -- both even end with the same French phrase Nest-ce pas? -- and the parallel shots in the ads, its clear that Ford is having a little fun with Cadillacs original. You can almost match up the commercials exactly.

(16,191 posts)Ford claims that the car will do over 20 miles in electric only mode, but you apparently ONLY get that range if all of the electronics, heaters, lights, air conditioners, radio, bluetooth, and other accessories are OFF. Real world range for typical users is only about 9 miles. Real world mileage in hybrid mode is 39-40 MPG.
The car isn't bad, but the real world benefits are fairly small once you factor in the fact that the Energi comes at a steep price premium over the standard CMAX, and that you are losing most of your trunk space for batteries and such (for a car its size, and one that is being marketed to young families, it has remarkably little cargo capacity).
If you want a plugin hybrid, the Volt and the plug in Prius are both better cars. The Prius will give you the same electric only range and better hybrid mileage for less money. The Volt will give you substantially better electric range and comparable hybrid mileage for only slightly more money, and it comes with a usable trunk that you can actually fit groceries and a stroller into.
Both of the Energi owners I spoke with had a long list of complaints about their cars and recommended that I not buy one. It was an unfortunate thing to hear, because on the surface it looks like a good car (and I'm sure it is, for some people).

(39,154 posts)In warm weather it gets nearly 45mpg city or highway. In cold weather, it is still very good, but not as good because batteries don't work as well when cold. It has sufficient trunk space, but without the fold-down rear seats that the gasoline-only model has. '03 was the first model year for the Civic Hybrid and it has been pretty much trouble-free. We had to replace the main batteries just before the 10-year warranty ran out. The old ones still worked, but were losing their responsiveness.

(793 posts)It will go right over the heads of Caddy folks. Tail-fins are not big enough and no coat of arms for a big insignia, and it probably is not cool for FAUX NEWS 68 year old viewers.

(1,307 posts)they will say that she was styled to be "dressed like a man" (when it reality her clothing is almost all unisex, which can confuse repubs)

(34,139 posts)They are practical, especially for the environment she is in for most of the commercial. I have spent most of my life in jeans and T-shirts and haven't worn a skirt or dress since 1979.
The "business" attire at the end grates on me more than anything else she wears. I detest heels - as a woman, I have refused to wear them for over half my life and seldom wore them for the first half of my life. They are impractical, uncomfortable, and bad for women.

She, of course, has been costumed by a stylist for the ad. And someone from hair and makeup did her hair and makeup.

The guy in the Caddy ad is such a douche bag. And that car is ugly to boot. Good for Ford.
