(889 posts)Certainly the MP's and entrance guards are armed. Do you think the MP's and entrance guards should be unarmed?

If you are partial to gunz, you've probably posted such crud.

Makes sense.
Edit: On further thought, I'm not so sure. The guards at the gate and the MP's are certainly well-armed. But what about once you get past the gates and deep into the base. Those probably are "gun-free" zones.

(2,205 posts)(the Truth) On all posts weapons are not allowed on Post or in Quarters. It was probably an armed Military cop who went nuts

(521 posts)11. The Texas Concealed Handgun Law does not apply on Fort Hood. Concealed handguns are prohibited on Fort Hood.
All official firearms are unloaded and locked away in vaults.
That's how it is on all Military Posts. No one straps up on a Mil Res. except the MPs. I guess the story will come out and then the whiners will appear.

(16,038 posts)But the implication that because of the association between the army and guns that this shouldn't happen there or should be easily stopped is incorrect.

Tyler Peterson, who was a full-time deputy in the Forest County Sheriff's Department and a part-time officer at the Crandon Police Department, shot and killed six people and critically injured a seventh before committing suicide. One of the victims, 18-year-old Jordanne Michele Murray, was Peterson's former girlfriend, and it was believed the dispute within the apartment motivated the shooting.
This Clown used his Department issued AR-15 with several thirty round Police Magazines to OFF his former girlfriend and her friends.

Thinking back on how drunk and rowdy we were in Co A, I'm not too sure I'd want ready access to weapons in the barracks.

(3,051 posts)Actually, military bases are gun free, except for guards/MPs, unless something has changed.

(7,408 posts)All the ones I go to have strict "no firearms or weapons allowed" policies.
Of course if the shooter was a military member, on a typical day they just get waves through the gate in their vehicle, usually after a glance at their ID card.
Even though it's against the law to take a firearm on there, not really any way to stop one from doing it.

(3,746 posts)Fort Hood tweeted that all personnel on post were asked to shelter in place after an incident at 5:30 p.m. EST.
CNN reported that an incident was under way at the sprawling central Texas base, a spokesman said.
Chris Haug declined to provide additional information, pending the release of a formal statement. A local sheriffs office said that it had heard a shooting was taking place.

CNN just backtracked, not sure if the dead person is the shooter or not, they are getting conflicting reports.
Maybe they should wait until they have the facts before making such statements

(210 posts)I have to say, if someone can walk into a FUCKING MILITARY BASE, ESPECIALLY ONE THAT HAD PREVIOUSLY HAD A SHOOTER AND HAS A PLAN IN PLACE TO DEAL WITH ONE, if he can come in and shoot the place up, a place where *everyone*, all 41,000 people on base are trained in how to use firearms, yet the bullet that stopped him came out of his OWN GUN, why do we think guns in schools are going to make them safer?
OH YES, AND A MILITARY BASE IS DESIGNED SO IF SOMEONE, ANYONE, SHOOTS AT THEM, THEY CAN SHOOT BACK. IT'S THE WHOLE FUCKING POINT.

(18,585 posts)What, you think that everyone gets a pat down and car search on entry?
Ft. Hood is a city within a city- a 340 square mile, 50,000 person city. There are retail stores, restaurants, a bank or two, even an auto parts store inside the base.
The only guns with bullets on base (that are allowed) are at the gates or on the base firing range. (And those are tightly controlled.)
pipoman
(16,038 posts)The poster thinks that everyone *should* be armed, or have reasonably fast access to a defensive weapon.
I have two brothers and a sister in the military (Navy, Marines and Army), and I wrote it when I was upset and worried about them. I think a shout of "Shooter on base!" should immediately be answered by concentrated rifle fire.
I realize that access is severely restricted (usually only in the armory or firing range unless you're an MP), and that not everyone should have immediate access to firearms while on base.
However, I also am concerned that the official procedure for a shooter on base is lock down, improvise a weapon, and attempt an ambush if they enter your threat zone. We spend over six hundred billion dollar on the military. They need to have something more effective than a chair leg or a crow bar if someone is a threat.
pipoman
(16,038 posts)He still lives less than a mile from the south gate of Pendleton and has many friends still in. I may have agreed 15 years ago. Now half of the base suffers from PTSD, there is more fighting, divorce, etc. I don't believe PTSD should preclude someone from owning a gun, when you get that many people together with PTSD it changes the dynamic and makes it more volatile, imo.
I can't take it anymore. When will we ever learn?
