Backers of bill to outlaw gay bias fall short in Nebraska Legislature

LINCOLN — Backers of a bill to ban job discrimination against gay Nebraskans fell short Monday.

Nebraska lawmakers voted 26-22 on a motion to cut off a filibuster on Legislative Bill 485. It takes 33 votes out of the 49-member Legislature to end a filibuster.

But State Sen. Amanda McGill of Lincoln said the idea is not dead. She predicted Nebraska would pass such legislation in coming years.

“We may not have the votes to end the filibuster, but it's going to happen,” she said, noting that she has encouraged young people to keep fighting for anti-bias legislation.
