South Carolina Panel Approves Expansion Of 'Stand Your Ground' Law To Include Unborn Children

Source: Huffington Post

The South Carolina Senate Judiciary Subcommittee voted 3-2 Thursday to approve the "Pregnant Women's Protection Act," a measure that would expand the state's "Stand Your Ground" law to permit pregnant women to use deadly force in defense of an unborn child, beginning at conception.

Opponents of the bill, sponsored by state Sen. Katrina Shealy (R), said the legislation is redundant under the state’s existing "Stand Your Ground" law, arguing that no situation exists in which an unborn child would be threatened when the mother was not.

Pro-choice advocates also condemned the measure as a back-door effort to ban abortions by defining an "unborn child" as "the offspring of human beings from conception until birth."

"There is some evidence that abortion opponents have been pursuing fetal homicide laws because they hope it will undermine abortion rights," Elizabeth Nash, state issues manager at reproductive health non-profit Guttmacher Institute, told ThinkProgress on Thursday. "It seems to be part of their overall strategy."

Just claim they were pregnant. When they get their period they can then claim they've miscarried.

Murder anytime by claiming they acted in "self defense" of their potential blastocyst....

Ugh. Gun nuttery combined with pro-life nuttery. Can it get any worse?

This is about murdering doctors who commit abortions or anyone invloved. This is about giving full rights to a fertilized egg/fetus over a living human being. The last quote from the article, that forced birthers are trying to get "life begins at conception" and fetal personhood in the back door is absolutely correct.

This isn't so sneaky/evil women can use it as an excuse for murder.

This is about gaining a legal argument for personhood so the courts can do it instead of relying on the voters who reject it everywhere it's tried.

my womb felt threatened? Hopefully, the NRA will call this one the political stunt that it is. Why stop at conception? Every egg that's not fertilized is a potential life flushed down the porcelain tea pot. Those murdering deniers of life! Those trillions of eggs should have the right to defend themselves!

Colorado Counties Want To Form 51st State To Avoid Environmental Protections

By Nicole Flatow on July 11, 2013

At least ten rural Colorado counties are taking aggressive steps to form a 51st state, saying their interests are not being met by moves to regulate the oil and gas industry, increase renewable energy, and better regulate guns. Organizers in Kansas and Nebraska are also interested in joining the state they call “North Colorado.”

Organizers met this week to draw up boundaries of the new state, as part of an ambitious schedule to draft a ballot initiative by August 1, and get a proposal before the voters in November. Congress must approve admission of a new state into the Union. But the U.S. Constitution also requires that secession of parts of any existing state be approved both by the voters and legislature of that state. This means Colorado would have to approve of the counties’ secession, as would Kansas and Nebraska if parts of those states wanted to join. One of the ten counties that initiated the movement, Weld County, is larger than Delaware and Rhode Island, according to a county commissioner.

One of the laws that movement representatives say “broke the camel’s back” requires rural energy cooperatives to get 20 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2020. The current goal is ten percent. While Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) signed the bill into law, he also signed an executive order committing to make an independent assessment of whether the 20 percent requirement is feasible, and to revisit the legislation next session if need be. The organizers also cite several failed bills to regulate the oil and gas industry that would have increased fines for violations of state law, and imposed other measures to address the fast-increasing number of both wells and oil spills and contaminations in Colorado over the last several years.

Proponents of the movement say the legislature is not recognizing its “main economic drivers, agriculture and energy.” But these energy-heavy rural counties are also particularly vulnerable to environmental degradation, which is why some residents have voiced strong opposition to the movement. “I don’t want be in a 51st state,” Washington County resident Steve Frey told the local CBS affiliate. “I don’t want any part of their fracking that they’re doing in Weld County...”

than what we've seen of him since Clarence Thomas Hearings....where he gave "A Pass to Clarence" over those who Would have had "Good Grounds" to Testify AGAINST HIM/

I never trusted Joe Biden after that performance with his HEARING... I thought he was a "turncoat" but then...most politicians ARE...and maybe he learned his lesson that the allowed Clarence Thomas to pass through and always be "THAT VOTE" against Democratic Ideals on the Supreme Court.

But...that Said...South Carolina is a Crazy Place since the "Shot from Ft. Sumter that Started the Civil War" and they are crazy there and the get more CRAZY THERE as the Decades go By!

I grew up there..SHAME! I had Great Liberal Leaning Educators at That Time (Windows of the late 50's/Early 60's...but since then it's been DOWNHILL ..all the way...

and I think the Left of the Dem Party never made a REAL EFFORT to engage that part of our Country which seems to Dominate these days even influencing President Obama.

Joe Bageant's Writings are a Clue about how the "Liberals Lost the South." He had a great vision and I wish he was still alive these days to enter into discussions.

"Deer Hunting with Jesus" is (I think) his last book on this....and Amazon has some good Review/Discussion/Critique of his thoughts there from what I remember from when I ordered that book.

http://www.amazon.com/Joe-Bageant/e/B001JRZ4CC

Molly Ivans is the next person who got it correct about the South and the Contradictions and where it might all go. SHE WAS THE BEST....and she died too.....Just When WE Dems needed her voice the most to deal with the "Tea Baggers."

http://www.amazon.com/Molly-Ivins/e/B000APEBCI

BUT, both Bageant and Ivans managed to lay out what we are faced with and if one looks to that past of them...one can see much in their writings.

I just thought of a nightmare scenario... What if some religious nutjob looks at this law and decides to shoot an abortion doctor and claim he/she was standing their ground in fear for one of the fetuses of the doctors patients. Considering this is South Carolina we are talking about it will probably be passed into law. This is a real slippery slope and I truly hope it does not spread to other states.

And it does seem to get worse every year, too small for a Republic and too big for an insane asylum. I would call my state senator and urge him to vote against this odious bill, should it get to the house floor, but alas, my senator is the totally brainless, right wing religious fanatic, Mike Fair. You know he was the one who wouldn't let the Wooly Mammoth become the state fossil unless words were said about Gawd amighty creating the same on the fifth day or whatever. It's really uncomfortable being locked in with these fundamentalist loonies, but unfortunately, I'm not financially able to get out.

Not only will I not alert on your post, I will give it a rec.
