Japanese whalers plan new Antarctic hunt

Source: Sydney Morning Herald

Andrew Darby

Japan's whalers expect to return to the Antarctic, despite losing an International Court of Justice case brought against them by Australia banning their current hunt.

Tokyo's Institute of Cetacean Research wants to go back to the Southern Ocean for a continuing "research program" after missing next summer, a court document filed in the United States says.

The new program would comply with the ICJ decision, according to a filing made for the institute to a United States District Court in a case against the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

Sea Shepherd founder, Paul Watson, said: "They're going to do lethal whaling. They need the meat to send back to pay for it."

2. Given that minke whales aren't endangered, I don't see what the big deal is.

So they harvest a few hundred whales...so what?

4. Why would it be prohibited when minkes aren't endangered?

What's more, is it "trade" if they only use the meat domestically?

DNA tests have shown Humpbacks, Sei and other whales in the meat supplies. There is no just a few for them.

7. Humpbacks aren't endangered, so no big deal. Sei whales are threatened, though, so that is a cause

for concern. Harvesting of sei whales (and others that are low in number) should not be resumed until their numbers build back up.

So you're seriously for whaling?
Killing whales is like killing the ocean version of us.
A sentient species with a language, etc.
Why hunt them at all?

Unfucking believable.

12. Saying I'm "for" whaling is a bit too strong. It would be more accurate to say that I'm indifferent

to it.

Killing whales is like killing the ocean version of us.

I've never seen any evidence that whales approach human intelligence.

Why hunt them at all?

Well, as I discovered in Iceland a few years ago, they do taste quite good.

Yet, strangely, there is ample evidence that the standard for "human intelligence" is pathetically low ...

Any species of whale exceeds the level of "intelligence" shown in several places upthread.

9. There are many who believe that
Sat Apr 12, 2014, 11:35 PM

Whales and Dolphins are intelligent creatures, maybe even as intelligent* as humans. IF so, it would be a crime to consume them and we certainly don't need to kill off an already endangered species. Whales were once used as oil, but no longer needed for that, as there are other fuels. Japanese don't need to feed school children whale meat, as most of them don't like the taste, and besides there are other sea food much better to eat.

To kill whales is a stupid (Baka) endeavor either way. Its not necessary and most countries have stopped hunting Whales. Japan has tried to skirt the international law by claiming its for Scientific reasons, but they don't seem to be doing any legitimate research and the Whale remains are going towards food, that is neither wanted nor required. Just my opinion.

(*There are those who believe they may be more intelligent as they have larger brains.)
