McDonald's foreign workers call it 'slavery'

Belizian temporary foreign workers docked pay for rent in corporate apartment

By Kathy Tomlinson, CBC News Posted: Apr 17, 2014 3:00 AM MT| Last Updated: Apr 17, 2014 11:32 AM MT

Foreign workers recruited from Belize are accusing McDonald’s Canada of treating them like "slaves," by effectively forcing them to share an expensive apartment – then deducting almost half their take-home pay as rent.

“When we arrived at the airport, they said, ‘We already have an apartment for you,’ so at that point we already know we don’t have a choice of where to live,” said Jaime Montero, who came to Edmonton with four others in September to work at McDonald’s.

"We had to live there. We were told this is what we are doing," said another worker who didn't want to be named because he still works for McDonald's.

The Belizeans said their dream of making good money in Canada to send to their families quickly shattered. Instead, they pocketed less than $800 per month – which they said was barely enough to live on.

It replaced actual slavery as soon as it fell out of favor. In many ways it's actually far more effective for the .01% because instead of paying the full cost of room and board for your slaves, they now get the rest of society to help out in the form of tax subsidies.

...on the other hand, slavery goes back a ways. To the beginnings of history. In fact, history itself largely began with the discovery of clay tablet accounting records of a system designed to keep up with plunder and the sales transactions of the people and booty they'd won in their raping, conquering, pillaging and other atrocities. So from that perspective, it's relatively ''new.'' Although it appears that the 1%ers are trying to recombine the two into the new ''slave-wages.''

- The irony here is of course, that the Repubs who like to take credit for ending slavery and saving the union, are now doing the EXACT OPPOSITE, while they themselves self-destruct.

7. Some of this is starting to make sense

in the last little while there have been stories popping up about some Canadian workers saying that McDonald's was hiring foreign workers and then forcing the Canadian workers out by slashing their hours and wages (one woman had worked for McDonald's for 24 years and had her pay slashed and hours cut, forcing her out). The foreign workers were also being paid more than the Canadian workers. Now, I thought that was super-odd, because isn't the whole point of bringing in foreign workers is so you can pay them less? Now, with this new story about charging rent excess rent and pocketing the difference, it all makes sense. Someone is profiting off of the excess rent. They also profit off of lower turn over because these poor workers are scared shitless to piss of an employer and end up stranded in a foreign country.

It sounds very similar to what I've read about people who illegally smuggle foreign workers into the US.
