Elon Musk plugs immigration reform

Source: Market Watch

Elon Musk offered a few economic policy prescriptions to a Washington audience on Friday, urging action on immigration reform and making tax laws more business-friendly.

“We need to take a look at our immigration laws,” Tesla Motors CEO Musk said at the annual conference of the U.S. Export Import Bank. The South Africa-born Musk is also CEO of SpaceX, a private commercial space transport company.

Musk said there are talented immigrants at U.S. universities and “we really don’t want to send them home.”

Musk’s comments come amid an impasse over immigration reform in Congress. The Senate has passed a comprehensive bill but the Republican-led House of Representatives won’t pass it. House Speaker John Boehner on Thursday mocked his Republican colleagues for being fearful of reforming immigration policy. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi shot back, telling Boehner to bring it up for a vote. “It’ll pass,” she said.

Musk also said the U.S. should reform its tax laws, noting the U.S.’s corporate tax rate – the world’s highest, though many companies employ tax breaks to pay far less than the statutory rate of 35%.
