Obama praises energy efficiency at local Walmart

Source: San Jose Mercury News

MOUNTAIN VIEW -- Standing beneath the glare of fluorescent lights inside a Walmart store, President Obama on Friday rolled out his plan for sweeping energy reform, an ambitious effort to convert more businesses, homes and government building to solar power.

Obama's energy initiative -- an executive action that calls for investments in more solar energy jobs, upgrading homes and buildings to be more efficient, and partnerships with the housing and tech industries -- is a core piece of Obama's oft-derailed climate change effort and aims to move the country away from foreign oil dependency while creating more jobs in the renewable energy sector.

Despite a spotty record on labor issues, Walmart has been what many experts consider a pioneer in energy efficiency and renewable energy. It's one of at least 10 private companies that, as part of Obama's plan, have agreed to double-down on their efforts to convert more of their energy to renewable sources. Dozens of affordable housing organizations, retailers, home builders and tech companies have also signed on to the presidents plan with their own plans to invest in solar, helping the environment and lowering their electricity bills.

Flanked by patio lights for $4.47 and women's tops for $14.44, Obama stepped to the podium at the Mountain View Walmart shortly before 10 a.m. and told the crowd: "This may look like a typical Walmart, but it's not -- and that's why I'm here."

The event was closed to the public, but I got to see the president's motorcade.

I don't care if this an allegedly 'green' Walmart building.

Walmart corporation is diametrically opposed to almost all of the social, educational, labor, energy and environmental policies that progressives stand for.

Pres. Obama's budget supports further gutting of the U.S. Postal Service.

Pres. Obama is still pushing the job-killing Trans Pacific Partnership.

Pres. Obama has not prosecuted the Wall Street embezzlers and fraudsters.

Yes, he's a Democrat and yes, he's better than either McCain or Rmoney.

But make no mistake, you cannot trust Pres. Obama to walk the talk when it comes to action supporting the working poor and working middle class Americans.
