Historic Coit Tower reopens after six-month restoration

(05-14) 12:15 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- Coit Tower officially opened just before noon Wednesday after a six-month closure to repair water-damaged murals and a leaking roof.
The $1.7 million project restored the historic fresco murals painted on wet plaster inside the tower by 19 artists during the great Depression and replaced the roof.
"These are historical landmarks in the city," Mayor Ed Lee said of the murals at the official ceremony attended by 100 city officials and dignitaries. "They mean something to generations of people."
