New Ukrainian president already at odds with Moscow

Russia and Ukraine were still at odds Monday, as Petro Poroshenko, who is poised to become Ukraine's president, said he would continue the campaign against separatists, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned against such action.
Poroshenko said Monday that he wanted to continue the military offensive in the separatist east but also to make it more "efficient".
"I support continuing the operation, but I demand that its format be changed," Poroshenko told reporters a day after winning Ukraine's presidential vote. "It must be shorter in terms of time-frames and more efficient."
At the same time, Lavrov was holding a press conference in Moscow at which he said Russia was willing to talk with Poroshenko but warned the Kiev authorities not to step up armed operations against separatists.

Gunfire, smoke, fighter jets seen and heard around Donetsk airport.
DONETSK, Ukraine, May 26 (Reuters) - Reuters journalists near Donetsk international airport in eastern Ukraine heard sustained gunfire in the vicinity and saw smoke billowing from somewhere inside the perimeter as fighter jets flew overhead on Monday.
On the day after a presidential election, gunmen forced the closure of the airport to flights and took over the terminal, demanding the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the facility.
