BREAKING: Obama Announces New Exec. Order

At the White House Pride Month Celebration this afternoon in the East Room, President Barack Obama announced a pending executive order that would protect federal employees against discrimination on the basis of gender identity.

After confirming that he has asked his staff to prepare an executive order barring federal contractors from discriminating against employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, the president announced that he has requested another executive order to sign, extending gender identity antidiscrimination protections to federal employees. Shortly after Obama assumed office in 2009, he issued a memorandum extending workplace protections and limited benefits to gay, lesbian, and bisexual federal employees and their same-sex spouses. The order announced today would extend the same kind of protections to federal employees regarding gender identity, meaning they could not be fired, denied promotion, or not hired because they happen to be transgender or gender-nonconforming.

Politico reports that White House spokesman Shin Inouye had no immediate comment about the timing or forthcoming details of the newest executive order.
