Obama Vows to Act Alone, Taunts Republicans

Source: AP/ABC

President Barack Obama defiantly dared congressional Republicans on Tuesday to try to block his efforts to act on his own and bypass a divided Congress that has thwarted his policy initiatives.

"So sue me," he taunted on a sweltering day, as he pushed lawmakers to pay for road and bridge repairs. "I'm not going to apologize for trying to do something."

Obama struck an aggressive tone in the face of a lawsuit threat from House Speaker John Boehner and in the wake of two defeats before the Supreme Court, including a unanimous decision from the court that he overreached when he appointed members of the National Labor Relations Board while the Senate was in recess.

His remarks came a day after Obama declared that he would act on his own to address weaknesses in the nation's immigration system after Boehner informed him that the House would not take up an immigration overhaul this year.

Good strategy and will probably work. If the GOP tries to impeach pre-midterms, it would be a political gift of epic proportions to Dems.

there are still too many "establishment" republicans around that remember the Clinton impeachment fall out. That is why Boehner is talking about the "novel" approach of suing the President ... he figures that it'll have the same effect, without the fall-out.

But as I have said before ... I think Boehner's suit is, unsurprisingly, ill-timed and will likely blow up in the gop's face, at the most inopportune moment ... in the height of the 2104 election cycle.

With this suit, it will be nearly impossible for him to control the message as the Administration will be able to answer all the "over-reach" charges with: Everything is constitutionally permissible; but more, necessary, as congress has been unable/unwilling to act on important matters of state. (President Obama is already using that exact language)

The response to the suit will read as a campaign ad for Democrats ... particularly, those running for a House seat, and to a lesser degree, a Senate seat. The response will highlight all the measures that Democrats/the Administration has put forward to deal with Jobs, the infrastructure, climate change, student debt, workers' wages, workplace equity, and all the other areas where President Obama has issued Executive Orders, only to be killed by the republican House, or "filibustered" in the Senate ... And, more, will highlight what republicans have offered instead ... 50+ votes to repeal the ACA, anti-abortion bills, etc., but nothing to address any of the areas where Executive Orders were issued.

I can't think of a better way to get the obstruction message out to the electorate, than having to answer this suit.

And I think it's brilliant to taunt them, since Boehner seems to be realizing that the House is likely unable to get standing to bring a suit ... the taunting will bring the outrage of the rank and file republicans to a fevered pitch and the anger will be directed towards the gop, not Democrats.

To me this isn't funny at all. We're screwed. The president is trying to help in ways he can, but there's not nearly enough he can do. We're still going to be in a mess when this administration is over. Way to go Tea Party. You've broken our government to the point nothing productive for the people can get past you. Now what are you going to do as things crumble? Seriously, what are your plans?
