First Of 3 Fuselages Removed From Derailment Site

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) -- Boeing is deciding what to do with six new commercial airplane bodies that fell off a train in western Montana, including three that slid down a steep riverbank, a company spokeswoman said Monday.

Experts from Boeing Co. and Spirit AeroSystems, which built the fuselages, are at the site of Thursday's derailment on the Clark Fork River about 50 miles west of Missoula, Boeing spokeswoman Dina Weiss said in a statement.

"Once we have completed our assessment of damages and determined our next course of action, we will decide what to do with the fuselages," she said.

She said other Boeing 777 and 747 airplane parts on some of the 19 cars that went off the tracks appear undamaged and will be shipped to the company's Everett, Washington, assembly plant.

My understanding is that the cargo was owned by the BNSF while it's in their possession (which of course is at the time of the derailment.) The interesting part of this is that it was a BNSF train on MRL right-of-way. How much who pays might be interesting.

Baby Cessna's should be flying out of the gravel nests in just a few months.

and disposition as scrap! At least when I was in manufacturing that was what we'd do. Of course the company wouldn't want to scrap these given their schedule position and cost of these things. But I don't think they should be used as this has never happened before and it would take extensive testing to ensure the integrity of the structure is not compromised.

...that these parts were en route from the non-union plants in the south? If so, that is yet another reason that screwing workers doesn't necessarily create a cost savings.

... when they're being shipped around the country by morons ...

Personally, I'd feel happier if there were some independent observers watching
to ensure that those fuselages are completely scrapped rather than repainted
and shipped out as a special cut-price offer ...
