LIRR strike averted, union officials say

Union officials said the MTA and LIRR unions reached a tentative agreement on Thursday when Gov. Cumo brokered an agreement in his Midtown offices, averting a devastating strike that would have stranded hundreds of thousands of people.

“A strike has been averted! A tentative agreement has been reached,” said the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 589 in a release on their website.

It ends four years of negotiations after contracts for eight LIRR unions ended in 2010.

Talks moved to Cuomo’s office in Midtown from a law firm where talks were held Wednesday.
