SBU intercepts phone conversations of separatists admitting downing a civilian plane

Source: Kyiv Post

Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was allegedly shot down by a group of Russian-backed Cossack militants near the village of Chornukhine, Luhansk Oblast, some 80 kilometers north-west of Donetsk, according to recordings of intercepted phone calls between Russian military intelligence officers and members of terrorist groups, released by the country’s security agency (SBU).

Igor Bezler: We have just shot down a plane. Group Minera. It fell down beyond Yenakievo (Donetsk Oblast).

Vasili Geranin: Pilots. Where are the pilots?

IB: Gone to search for and photograph the plane. Its smoking.

VG: How many minutes ago?

IB: About 30 minutes ago.

SBU comment: After examining the site of the plane the terrorists come to the conclusion that they have shot down a civilian plane. The next part of the conversation took place about 40 minutes later.

“Major”: These are Chernukhin folks who shot down the plane. From the Chernukhin check point. Those cossacks who are based in Chernukhino.

“Grek”: Yes, Major.

"Major": The plane fell apart in the air. In the area of Petropavlovskaya mine. The first “200” (code word for dead person). We have found the first “200”. A Civilian.

“Greek”: Well, what do you have there?

“Major”: In short, it was 100 percent a passenger (civilian) aircraft.

“Greek”: Are many people there?

“Major”: Holy sh__t! The debris fell right into the yards (of homes).

“Greek”: What kind of aircraft?

“Major”: I haven’t ascertained this. I haven’t been to the main sight. I am only surveying the scene where the first bodies fell. There are the remains of internal brackets, seats and bodies.

“Greek”: Is there anything left of the weapon?

“Major”: Absolutely nothing. Civilian items, medicinal stuff, towels, toilet paper.

“Greek”: Are there documents?

“Major”: Yes, of one Indonesian student. From a university in Thompson.

Militant: Regarding the plane shot down in the area of Snizhne-Torez. It’s a civilian one. Fell down near Grabove. There are lots of corpses of women and children. The Cossacks are out there looking at all this.

They say on TV it’s AN-26 transport plane, but they say it’s written Malaysia Airlines on the plane. What was it doing on Ukraine’s territory?

Nikolay Kozitsin: That means they were carrying spies. They shouldn’t be f…cking flying. There is a war going on.

The rebels, it's not a new idea, cell phone surveillance. If it's being used against them, they should notice, when they keep getting ambushed.

So if true, they are dumb, and this lets the cat out of the bag, now they will know.

part of good eavesdropping is not having the target suspect eavesdropping. there's always a cat and mouse game between encryption and spying

though the social media post from Strelkin seems to trump these recordings.

If Kiev is having this much trouble with these amateurs while able to listen in, they are pretty dumb too. Entirely possible, I suppose.

I've been assuming Kiev would "win" the war, because they have western backing and Putin is not willing to back the rebels much, and the rebels looks like amateurs with some ex-military types who are nostalgic for combat or something (dumb). But I've had doubts when I see how the government in Kiev conducts itself too, they are the sort of guys I expect to lose wars in short order, and they are relying on lots of irregular troops, as well. So I also have expected it to drag on interminably. This might change that\, depending on how it falls out.

concocted by admirers of righwing dictators and bigots like Putin and Modi do not go over well at a liberal website.

Your 'speculation' was about as legitimate as Joffrey Baratheon.

"Putin-phobic" from you is a compliment, since Mr. Putin is a fascist, warmongering, bigoted imperialist.

Even if Putin saved the world from hunger and disease singlehandedly, they would still hate Putin and every one of his positions/policies.

I don't like Putin's bigotry against LGBT people and his heavy-handedness but I don't dislike everything he does because of that nor do I alert every post that supports some of the policies of Putin like some do here and jointly hide opposing posts to silence any contrary view.

You "speculated" that President Obama ordered a civilian airliner to be shot down so as to convince the Europeans to go along with sanctions on Russia. That's not "legitimate speculation"--that's batshit crazy wing-nuttery somewhere to the right of Michelle Bachman. Come to think of it, she and her hubby are Putin fans too, aren't they?

Go figure.

Bullshit! But
"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."

Pavlo Klimkin, the Ukrainian foreign minister confirms that Ukraine doesn't have the military capability in that area, and the hardware must, therefore, be Russian. Pushes the notion that The Russians are putting up a smokescreen.
