Sen. John McCain said Thursday that he is withholding judgment on the Malaysia Airlines crash, but vowed that there would be “hell to pay” if the plane was shot down by the Russian military or separatists.

“To leap to conclusions could be very embarrassing and really inappropriate until we have more information,” the Arizona Republican told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell shortly after reports that a commercial flight carrying 295 people was shot down in the eastern part of Ukraine.

My country is in mourning as at least 173 passengers were Dutch. I think our own PM's first reaction is a lot more sensible, saying we need to learn the facts first instead of jumping to conclusions.

He says there is hell to pay if it was Russia or the separatists. It is still possible it was the Ukrainians. We don't know. It appears unlikely this was Ukraine but the facts are not known.

So if it was the Ukrainians what is your answer then?

And even if it was Russia or the separatists....if it turns out there were no Americans on the flight why is this our issue? The flight didn't depart from the U.S. The flight wasn't destined to the U.S. What right is it for the U.S. to involve itself? At that point we should be supporting the Ukrainians in ascertaining the source of the missile, etc. but leave it to Malaysia and the Europeans and other countries who lost nationals to address this with Russia.

I agree Putin is a horrible man and wish he would go away. But the calls for us to do something are stupid. What exactly are we to do? Do we invade? Good luck with that WWIII. Sanctions will slowly affect those in power but aren't likely to result in any major changes in behavior.

I want to ask these hawks exactly what they expect we should and/or can do. They will just jump and down and cry....do something without a clue as to what we can do...

Ukraine has only ever purchased military hardware from Russia and much of it is actually manufactured in Ukraine. It follows that Ukraine's entire arsenal is Russian made.
