GOP congressional candidate wants Americans to fight government tyranny with bazookas
Source: Raw Story
A Republican congressional candidate responded to a mass shooting by suggesting that Americans had a constitutional right to own as powerful weaponry as they can afford.
It is my belief that any, any, any, any weapon that our government and law enforcement possesses ought to be allowed for individuals to possess in this country, said Jody Hice, a religious right activist, talk radio host, and Georgia congressional candidate.
The only restriction Hice would place on armament ownership, besides budget, would be prior criminal records.
The Second Amendment is about us defending ourselves against potentially tyrannical government, Hice said two years ago on his self-titled radio program. You cannot defend yourself with a BB gun if your opponent has cannons and bazookas and missiles.

(3,596 posts)The 2nd Amendment starts with a reason for the amendment itself...."a well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed".....
If they had meant to say the reason for the amendment was to protect the people from the government they would have said so.
Mr. Hice, like most conservatives, don't know anything about history nor is it of interest to them.
When the Constitution was adopted it was a more powerful document than the Articles of Confederation. There was many Federalists who were concerned the newly empowered federal government would deprive the states of the right to maintain state militia. There was no standing U.S. Army at the time. The only "organized" military force were the state militias.
Each state was responsible, under its general police power, to quell uprisings, etc. So the amendment had nothing to do with protecting the people against the federal government, per se but against the federal government depriving citizens of arms that were needed in the state militias so the states could keep their residents safe.
Mr. Hice, most likely, will join other nut jobs in Washington including Gohmert, King, etc.

(460 posts)On Tuesday, Jody Hice, a conservative pastor, won the Republican primary election in Georgias 10th District. Since the district has historically leaned conservative, it is likely that he will win the general election in November against his Democratic opponent, Ken Dious.
Hice previously wrote a book called Its Now or Never: A Call to Reclaim America in 2012, and hosts a radio show called The Jody Hice Show which can be heard on approximately 400 radio stations, in which he has made many public comments about Islam, gays, women, and various other topics. Here are some of the most eyebrow-raising remarks he has made.
On Islam:
1. Although Islam has a religious component, it is much more than a simple religious ideology. Its a complete geopolitical structure and, as such, does not deserve First Amendment protection.
From his book, Its Now or Never: A Call to Reclaim America (via Raw Story)
2. Most people think Islam is a religion, its not. Its a totalitarian way of life with a religious component.
- From a 2011 Coweta County Tea Party Patriots event
3. [A]lthough terror is a real threat and must be taken seriously, the worst plan is the Muslim Brotherhoods attempt to take over America! Dont think that it cant happen. Europe once considered itself impervious to Islam. Today we are being told that Europe will be 20 percent Islamic by mid century because they were ignorant to the problem until it was too late. The United States had better wake up to the fact that this threat is real!
From his book, Its Now or Never: A Call to Reclaim America (via Mother Jones)
On LGBT Americans:
4. These shocking words by Michael Swift have been considered part of the gay manifesto by many, and reveal the radical agenda that is currently threatening our nation One need not look very far to discover the overall agenda of militant homosexuality, and its attempt to permanently change American society.
From his book, Its Now or Never: A Call to Reclaim America. He was commenting on a satirical piece by gay writer Michael Swift that poked fun at the idea of a gay agenda. However, he neglected to mention that Swifts piece was satire. (via Mother Jones)
5. We are enslaving and entrapping potentially hundreds of thousands of individuals in a lifestyle that frankly they are not.
From a 2013 episode of his radio show
6. The concept of love is not the issue when it comes to marriage! People love all kinds of other people and things, but that does not grant permission for marriage. It is illegal to marry a child or a sibling. It is illegal to marry a pet, which many people love dearly.
From his book, Its Now or Never: A Call to Reclaim America (via Mother Jones)
7. Some ask the question, How does same-sex marriage threaten your marriage? The answer is similar to asking, How does a trashy neighborhood affect you? It might not affect you at all on a personal level. But, we are not talking about a same-sex marriage. We are talking about an effort to redefine marriage, and that would have drastic results and irreversible consequences!
From his book, Its Now or Never: A Call to Reclaim America (via Mother Jones)
On women running for office:
8. If the womans within the authority of her husband, I dont see a problem.
From a 2004 interview with the Athens Banner-Herald
On mass shootings such as those at Sandy Hook:
9. We have tragedies, horrifying tragedies such as this, happening in America today with much greater frequency because God is largely removed from our culture we have been kicking God out of the schools, and we have been kicking God out of the public square.
-- From his radio show after the Sandy Hook shooting
On abortion and reproductive rights:
10. How many times have we denounced the murderous acts of people like Hitler? Most certainly, his actions and similar ones by other political leaders should be vehemently condemned! Yet, we so easily overlook the genocide that has been committed within our own country. Our murderous dealings are much worse than Hitlers six million Jews or Mussolinis three hundred thousand. The genocide in America is inexcusable! It is worse than genocide. We are guilty of eugenics!
From his book, Its Now or Never: A Call to Reclaim America (via Mother Jones)
Boy, this kind of stuff is really getting scary. Less than a year from now, this guy (and nutjobs like him) will be trusted to nominate candidates to the military academies.

(1,214 posts)I'm not a gun owner, I'm not interested in guns; but I grew up around guns, learned to shoot, learned gun safety, and have no problem with an individual citizen owning a weapon. Want a gun? Great, pass a background check, get some training, and buy a gun. I don't even really have a problem with a concealed carry permit. I also think that if you screw up with your gun, and someone is harmed, you deserve to be in serious trouble with the law.
But seriously, anybody who wants Americans to have "any, any, any, any weapon" should have their head 1) surgically removed from their ass, and 2) examined by a psychiatrist.
What does the right-wing really want? To turn America into Israel vs Gaza? The former Yugoslavia? Iraq? I'm tired of watching the evening news, and reading the online news, and seeing not one shooting here and there but shootings, everywhere, all the time, non-stop. I know the gun lobby hates that word, "shooting," but that's the word for when someone is shot. Does this person want US citizens to have tanks? Fighter jets? I do not want to see this turn into rocket exchanges and mass graves. Is that what the GOP wants?

(520 posts)Given that the current SCOTUS has basically ruled against any kind of gun control because, y'know, tyranny, there doesn't seem to be any rational argument against possessing ANY weapon. Whether anthrax, ricin, or a homemade nuke, if you have it to protect the citizenry from our duly elected tyrannical government, that is your Second Ammendment right.
Is it really any crazier than an AR-15 with a 100 round dual drum magazine being legal?
