McCain Calls Botched Arizona Execution 'Torture'

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Thursday called Wednesday's botched execution in Arizona "torture."
"I believe in the death penalty for certain crimes. But that is not an acceptable way of carrying it out. And people who were responsible should be held responsible," he told Politico. "The lethal injection needs to be an indeed lethal injection and not the bollocks-upped situation that just prevailed. Thats torture."
McCain was tortured for years in North Vietnam as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War.
Convicted killer Joseph Rudolph Wood III was "gasping and snorting" for over an hour after receiving a lethal injection. It should have taken about 10 minutes, but Wood lay dying for nearly two hours.

(1,727 posts)I'd say that his incessant war mongering and the fact that he's been voting in lock step with the rest of his Republican cohort since Obama took office is proof that he's exactly where he belongs.

Execution of Joseph Wood
I am concerned by the length of time it took for the administered drug protocol to complete the lawful execution of the convicted double murderer, Joseph Wood. While justice was carried out today, I directed the Department of Corrections to conduct a full review of the process.
One thing is certain, however, inmate Wood died in a lawful manner and by eyewitness and medical accounts he did not suffer. This is in stark comparison to the gruesome, vicious suffering that he inflicted on his two victims and the lifetime of suffering he has caused their family.

(46,326 posts)McCain still says some should be killed for certain crimes.
It puts the state into saying who lives and who dies.
Tell me, when have we *EVER* seen any of the 1%-ers sent to death row?
And there are those who have been released or should be (Brewer is blocking some exonerations) those in Arizona convicted for crimes they didn't do.

(22,000 posts)If he came out completely against the death penalty that would warrant applause. Of course he'd never do that. He's just in favor of killing people faster.

(301 posts)but botched death penalties to criminals who committed unbelievably heinous crimes is not one of them, as long as the death penalty succeeds in the end.

(11,843 posts)Not for Wood. Not for those in favor of the death penalty. For those against the death penalty, is any given execution really worse than any other? I suppose one could count the people facing a death sentence. Other than those on death row, you have to be in a really weird place to say that you support execution, but only if done by fluffy bunnies.
